Announcing our Weekly Wonders for the weekend of March 4-6, 2016.

Griffin Back, 18, Aquajets Swim Team: 100y free (44.74) – Swimming unattached for Eden Prairie high school and the Minnesota MSHSL Boys AA Championships, Back broke the All-Time and Class AA Meet Record leading off the 400 free relay with 44.74. Earlier in the meet he had broken the All-Time and Class AA records while winning the individual event in 44.80. Back also won the 200 IM in 1:47.79, missing the All-Time and Class AA records by .08. Finally, Beck swam the breast leg of Eden Prairie’s 200 medley relay which broke the All-Time and Class AA records as well.

Michael Linnihan, 13, Elmbrook Swim Club: 200y free (1:45.08) – Linnihan won the boys’ 13-14 200 free at the Wisconsin 13-and-Over Short Course State Championships, dropping a total of 2.8 seconds between his prelims and finals swims. Linnihan’s winning time was 12.2 seconds faster than he had been at the 12-and-Under Championships a year ago. He also ended the weekend with new times in the 50/100/500 free and 200 fly.

Miles Smachlo, 17, Albany Starfish: 200y free (1:38.10) – Swimming unattached for Deerfield Academy at the New England Prep School Division 1 Championships, Smachlo swam off-events and still set New England Prep records: 1:38.10 in the 200 free and 44.78 in the 100 free. He also went a personal best in the fly leg (20.93) on Deerfield’s first-place AAA medley relay (1:33.51). Smachlo leaves the league holding an unprecedented 4 individual records and is part of Deerfield’s 2015 record-setting medley relay (1:31.71).

Kelsey Dambacher, 18, Quest Swimming: 500y free (4:52.89) – Dambacher, who came in with a seed time of 5:06 (because her 2013 time of 5:02 had expired), dropped 12 seconds in prelims and another 1.5 in finals to finish second in the women’s open 500 free at the Virginia Short Course Senior Championships. Dambacher also went best times in the 100/200 free and 100 back.

Hunter Connelly, 17, Red Wing Swim Club: 100y back (48.87) – Swimming for Red Wing High School at the Minnesota MSHSL Boys A Championships, Connelly set the Minnesota Class A record in the 100 back when he won with 44.87, beating his nearest competitor by 2 seconds. Connelly also swam on all three Red Wing relays, leading off the 200 medley relay in 22.83 and the 200 free relay in 21.56, and anchoring the 400 free relay in 46.89.

Jordan Ashmore, 16, The Dolphins Portland Swimming: 200y back (2:00.18) – Ashmore clocked her first-ever Winter Juniors cut while winning the 200 back at the Senior/Region XII Speedo Short Course Championships at Mt. Hood Community College. She also won the 100 free and 100 fly and picked up second-place finishes in the 50 free and 200 IM.

Max Edwards, 15, Enfinity Aquatic Club: 200y back (1:50.50) – Edwards picked up a first-time Winter Juniors cut in the 200y back in prelims at Southeastern Swimming’s Southern Premier hosted by Tennessee Aquatics. It was a best time by 3.1 seconds and landed him in the B final, where he then clocked a lifetime-best 2:10.41 in the 200m back. Edwards also earned new PBs in the 500y free and 100m back.

Jack Lanphear, 18, Mount Lebanon Aqua Club: 100y breast (54.82) – Representing Mount Lebanon High School at the WPIAL AAA Championships at Joseph E Trees pool at the University of Pittsburgh, Lanphear won the boys’ 100 breast with a new WPIAL record of 54.82. He also clocked a PB in the 200 IM with 1:55.46.

Megan Doty, 17, Lake Country Swim Team: 200y fly (1:58.63) – Doty blasted through the 2:00 barrier for the first time, dropping nearly 2 seconds in her 200 fly to record a personal-best 1:58.63 and finish second in the event at the Wisconsin 13-and-Over Championships. Doty finished the weekend with best times in the 50/100 free, 100 back, 200 fly, and 400 IM.
