Abby Jagdfeld of the Waukesha Express Swim Team in Wisconsin was the star on day 3 of the 2014 NCSA long course Junior National Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Jagdfeld, a Purdue commit, swam a 2:00.31 in the girls’ 200 free. That broke the old Meet Record of 2:01.43 that Jagdfeld did last year to win this title, and beat out Kelsey Vetalice of The Woodlands Swim Team for the gold medal. This swim converts to a 1:45.5 in yards, which could make her an immediate NCAA qualifier for the Boilermakers. For a Purdue team that finished 17th in the 800 free relay at NCAA’s last year, adding a swimmer of this caliber, to replace the team’s top 200 freestyler last year, the now-graduated Carly Mercer, could bump them up into All-American status.
She was one of 10 event champions on Thursday night at the IUPUI Natatorium, and was one of three new individual record holders.
The 2nd record went to Shea Hoyt in the women’s 50 breaststroke with a 32.86. That cut a tenth-of-a-second off of the record set by Lauren Beaudreau ten years ago.
That swim for Hoyt also puts her among the top 20 American swimmers so far this year, though the race hasn’t been done at Nationals. She’s going to Iowa next year – another Big Ten connection at this Midwest-heavy meet.
Jacob Miller from the Redbird Swim Club won the men’s 400 IM in 4:26.04, which tied to the hundredth the old Meet Recor set last year by Robert Owen.
Toward the end of the meet, the Poseidon Swim Team took six-tenths of a second off of Rose Bowl Aquatics’ Meet Record in the girls’ 400 free relay, swimming a 3:51.98. There, the winning team was Casey Fanz, Katherine Nezelek, Hailey Ladd, and Sydney Pesetti.
Other winners on Thursday:
- Erick Huft from the Edina Swim Club won the boys’ 200 free relay with a 1:53.26. He zoomed past the field with a very fast kick on his last 50 meters, splitting 27.74.
- Ben Gorski won the boys’ 50 breaststroke in 25.95, beating out Pearce Kieser (29.79).
- Georgia commit Meaghan Raab won the girls’ 50 fly in 28.00, beating out Poseidon 16-year old Casey Franz (28.14).
- Matthew Harrington of the CATS Aquatic Team in Illinois, with a 25.14. That follows in the footsteps of his teammate Connor Black, who set the record last year.
- Allyson McHugh won the girls’ 400 IM in 4:52.05, beating out Poseidon’s Madison Boswell, who took 2nd in 4:53.27.
- NCAP’s Grant Goddard, James Patrick, Luke Thorsell, and Adrian Lin all split 52-mids and combiend for a 3:30.40 to win the boys’ 400 free relay. That’s despite NBA getting a 50.89 anchor from Nicholas Bigot to place 2nd in 3:31.27.
