Kate Douglass on Post Olympic Racing, Event Lineup: “I knew it wasn’t gonna be the same”

2025 U.S. NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Kate Douglass made some changes in her event lineup at this year’s US Nationals, but that didn’t change her domestic dominance. The Olympic champion won both the 100 and 200 breast while taking 2nd in the 50 fly and 3rd in the 50 and 100 free. This rendered her 3 individual events at the World Championships in Singapore next month.

It will be interesting to see who will emerge in the next two years to compete with Kate Douglass in the W 100 BR.

Kate Douglass has a new “toy” to play with this summer. That should break the monotony (200 IM).

It’s been a whirlwind tour for the past 16 months:

Doha, QA
Paris, FR
Shanghai, CN
Incheon, KR
Singapore, SG
Budapest, HU

What will she do professionally until 2028 – just swim or some sort of other career?

Training to be a pro swimmer + all her endorsement obligations is a pretty good professional career. KD probably made close to 7 figures in 2024. Does she need to have second career at the same time?

There’s gonna be big meet coming up after this year like Pan Pacs and world championship at Budapest two years from now and I guess she’s gonna be busy preparing for LA.

Given Douglass’ talent level she should be in more than two individual events. That’s a frustration. But credit to Huske for grabbing those spots for herself. Huske has such wiry explosive athleticism I always know she’ll finish those races when close.

Douglass has to be in peak form to hold off Huske. Taking a month off after short course worlds explains why the 50 and 100 freestyle were the wrong side of 24 and the wrong side of 53.

She’s in three individual events, she also qualified for the 50 fly

The W 50 FR was never a given for Kate Douglass with Torri Huske and Gretchen Walsh in the field.

Kate Douglass admitted that her first two events were not where she wanted to be.

Let’s hope she experiences a stellar training camp.

How’s a 50 split? Fastest.

Adding the 100 breaststroke is a unique challenge for Douglass, given her gliding style. I thought her 200 breaststroke at trials looked too much like a 100, and that’s why it was comparatively weak. Alex maintaining even in the adjacent lane was part of the issue. Douglass didn’t look nearly as relaxed as normal. She wasn’t getting the typical awesome distance per stroke.

However, once the 200 looked like a hybrid 200/100 I knew that meant great things for the 100. Sure enough, she swam it better than ever and her final 10 meters were the best of her career.

it’s more likely her 200 was weaker than normal bc of less cardio fitness after sporadic training all fall and a full month off after SC Worlds…

Great news for Team USA: KD no longer appears to be waffling about swimming through Los Angles 2028. It seems she is setting up her quad already and will be ready for her 3rd Olympics

It’s funny how Kate and Regan are best friends but, to the average fun, they sem like they could not be more different. Regan is extremely transparent in her interviews and about future plans and stuff like that, and KD kinda keeps you on your toes and guessing (not a bad thing). Regan is extremely outgoing and talkative, and KD is a lot more reserved and introverted. etc etc

The joint interview they did post-world cups together was so funny for that exact reason. Regan was able to pull some more info out of KD basically by blowing up her spot haha
