The Spring Speedo Sectionals continued on Friday at the Idaho Central Aquatic Center. This second finals session included the 100 backstroke, 200 freestyle, and 400 IM for both girls and boys.
Cal commit Alexa McDevitt, who represents Bellevue Club, was a double event winner on the night, as she secured victory in both the 200 free and 400 IM. The 200 free was first on her schedule and she faced a tough battle with 16-year-old Madelaine Thornton. The two were separated by just 0.16 at the halfway mark, but McDevitt turned on the jets over the final 100 to win, 1:47.34 to Thornton’s 1:48.57. McDevitt owns a lifetime best of 1:45.96 in this distance, which she recorded back in December of 2023, while Bend Swim Club’s Thornton lowered her previous best of 1:49.12.
McDevitt’s 400 IM performance was much more dominant, as she notched a time of 4:15.25 to top the field by over seven seconds. She was just under three seconds shy of her best time (4:12.57) from February of 2024. She was trailing by about half a second at the 200-yard turn, but her swift breast split of 1:10.97 (35.03/35.94) gave her a comfortable lead that she never surrendered.
Thornton nabbed a win on her own in the 100 back, where she topped the field with a time of 53.47. She tore through the first 50 in 25.73 before closing the race in 27.74. Her time lowered her previous best of 54.18 from December’s Winter Junior Championships in Austin.
Thornton ended the session by anchoring Bend Swim Club’s victorious 400 free relay in 49.13. Emma Bronson led off the squad in 51.75 before Adeline Bennett (52.83) and Rowan Long (54.17) split solid efforts on the middle legs. Foothills Swim Team placed 2nd in 3:28.49, while Sawtoon Aquatic Club rounded out the podium in 3rd with a time of 3:28.97.
While there were no double-event winners for the boys, we still saw some impressive performances across the board. 18-year-old Ben Madson, a Missouri commit, put his hand on the wall in 48.42 to win the 100 back. He opened the race with a time of 23.19 before accelerating home over the final 50 in 25.23. His best time rests at the 47.76 that he threw down back in December, where he produced splits of 23.37 and 24.37. He was out under his personal record pace here in Boise, but added 0.86 on the back half.
22-year-old Quinton Cynor (1:35.06) led the 200 free field by over two seconds, with 17-year-old Aiden Hammer finishing 2nd in 1:37.29. Cynor is swimming unattached with a club, while Hammer represents the King Aquatic Club, based in Washington. Both athletes were about a second shy of their lifetime bests, with Cynor owning a mark of 1:34.34 and Hammer having clocked 1:35.85 in the past.
Hammer originally committed to Cal in October, but switched his commitment to Texas last month. He also announced that he would be reclassifying to the graduating class of 2025, rather than 2026, and that he will be attending classes and competing in the fall.
Another Texas recruit, 18-year-old Campbell McKean of Bend, won the only other event of the day. He swam to a time of 3:43.02 to win the 400 IM by over 11 seconds, which was just shy of his lifetime standard (3:42.54) from December. McKean also split a very fast 42.82 on Bend’s 400 free relay, which ultimately placed 4th overall. His best flat start time is 44.99, so it was a big leap forward, even with the relay swing advantage.
The Foothills quartet of Duncan Salmen (44.53), Carter Bradley (45.32), Evan Curran (44.84), and Bayden Todd (45.08) sprinted to the wall in a time of 2:59.77 to win the boys’ 400 free relay. With that performance, they shaved 5.20 seconds off their entry time. King Aquatic Club bagged silver in 3:01.06, highlighted by a 44.13 anchor split by Hammer. Stingray Swim Team stopped the clock in 3:02.21 for 3rd, with Shelby Lee leading off in 43.88.
