FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams took the top spot in the season-opening Fairfield Invitational with the men posting 756 points and the women registering 759 points to capture first place. The two teams combined for 26 first-place finishes out of the 28 swimming events raced today with the women securing 14 and the men recording 12 first place spots during the afternoon competition. The results were the first career victories for Head Coach Jake Lichter.

After the men’s team total, Southern Connecticut State University grabbed the runner up position with 497 points and Manhattan University garnering third place with 200 points.

Aidan Schnapf highlighted Fairfield’s success with his pool-record tying time of 2:07.84 in the 200 back. But that success came both in relay and individual events, starting with Fairfield sweeping the 200 medley relays to start the day. Erini PappasTone Sandsjoe, Lara Kisakol, and Olivia Thompson combined for a time of 1:59.13 to take first place. Max McMillanEnrique GarciaJay Parente, and Alex Sirkowa came together collectively touched the wall first in 1:46.54.

“Today was a great start to the season,” Coach Lichter said. “We had excellent performances across the board from our graduate students down to our first-year student-athletes. We are excited to build on this momentum as we prepare for four more weekends of dual meet racing.”

That run of four weekends begins with the first road date which sends the Stags to Bryant University on October 5 for a dual meet. The following two dates will bring Fairfield back home for a dual meet with Providence College on October 19 and Monmouth University on October 26.

Pretty bad when only teams you get to your invite are Division 2, one team’s divers, and Manhattan (maybe the weakest Div. 1 swim program in the nation). And then the coach jumps in the pool to celebrate they beat the other teams participating … good luck with that.

If you knew anything about swimming you would know it’s tradition for a coach to jump in/get soaked for his first victory. It was his first meet for Fairfield and his first wins, not his fault he beat those teams.
He won’t be jumping in for every meet
