The University of Virginia women won their 5th straight (and 20th overall) ACC team title this past week in Greensboro while the UVA men placed 5th. Head coach Todd DeSorbo shares his thoughts on how his team performed overall at the conference championship.

Yes UVA had a few girls who still might make the NCAA cut but did not get to go to ACC.

If they prepped the men’s team for accs I’m concerned what an unprepared team looks like. Year after year of top recruits to be 6th
Over the course of 7 seasons, from 2017 ACCs to 2024 ACCs, the men have moved up 1 spot from 7th to 6th, while the women have developed into arguably the most dominant women’s team in the history of the NCAA and broken countless records.
But he has top male recruits coming……….
UF wasn’t known for sprinting then Dressel showed up.
Stanford wasn’t know for distance swimming then Ledecky showed up.
I have a feeling it’s going to be hard to mess up the studs they have coming in. We all know they’re going to shoot up the rankings really quickly. College coaching is 50% recruiting (and I may be low balling it), 50% can you make the kids on your team faster.

so like… this analysis of the UVA men’s team is just wrong.
While the original statement made is false I do feel that the uva men’s team has underperformed. While they are by no means a bad team, their relatively good recruiting has not shown the results one might expect.
Since 2019 the uva men’s team has had an overall NCAA recruiting class average of 6.4 with this data coming from the swimswam class rankings. Ranking by year – (3,9,6,6,8). Their average placement at ACC has been as follows since 2019. Avg – 3.6 (3,2,4,4,4,5). An average ranking of 3.6 is very good but when you have an average class rank of 6.4 with other teams like cal, stanford, texas,asu often filling up the top spots of recruiting classes and nc… Read more »
Even with those top recruits coming the development of the men’s side has been stagnant and won’t miraculously change once the high schoolers show up.
That being said they still have to train and compete in an environment where they aren’t top dogs in their field. 1:40 in the 200 IM is amazing, but it doesn’t get you top 3. As well as the other issues that come up with the transition to college swimming.
Very well put. I have noticed that as well. Many top male recruits coming in have not accomplished much once they got to UVA. I wonder if all of the energy, attention, and focus is on the women’s team with workouts and resources optimized around them. The men’s team should be doing better than they are.
