USA Swimming member Bradley Gibble has been temporarily suspended by the US Center for Safe Sport for “allegations of misconduct.”
Gibble grew up in State College, Pennsylvania and swam collegiately at Columbia.
USA Swimming confirmed that at the time of his suspension, he was a coaching member of the organization.
Gibble is awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of Indecent Assault Without Consent of Other, Indecent Assault of a Person Less than 16 Years of Age, and Corruption of Minors. His hearing is scheduled for August 4.
In the state of Pennsylvania, “Indecent Assault” refers to sexual assault.
Specifically, Gibble has been charged with two 2nd degree misdemeanors for the indecent assault charges and one first degree misdemeanor for the corruption of minors charge.
A misdemeanor conviction for indecent assault of the first degree can mean up to seven years in jail, and a fine of up to $15,000.
The charges are out of York, Pennsylvania, where Gibble was formerly the head lifeguard and a part-time swim coach at the York YMCA, though he left that position 9 months ago. The YMCA is home to a large aquatic center and swim team that has produced a number of high profile collegiate swimmers.
When contacted by SwimSwam, Gibble said that he denied the allegations against him and “(welcomes) the opportunity to have (his) case heard by an impartial jury.”
Gibble has three other prior records in the state of Pennsylvania. One is a minor traffic violation from 2015, another is a defiant tresspassing charge from 2015, and the third is a 2017 charge for purchasing an alcoholic beverage by a minor from 2017, three months before his 21st birthday. He pled guilty to all three of those charges.
All for keeping the sport safe but shouldn’t someone be proven guilty before tarnishing their name throughout the entire sport?
Authorities have to decide on a balance between “tarnishing the name of the accused” and “doing everything that they can to protect children.”
Given the long, awful, and brutal history of this sport’s inability to protect children, I’m okay with the direction that the pendulum has swung. Too many kids were abused by abusers that were hired anyway for far too long when we just kept it all hush hush.
Transparency in the system is the only way the system works. It’s something you sign up for when you sign up as a youth sports coach.
It is extremely difficult for swimmers to come forward to file a complaint. Like all abuse victims (whether physical or emotional abuse), they fear retribution or even being black balled for the rest of their careers (swimming). Their reputation in life can be tarnished because “they came forward.” USA swimming has a reputation for not protecting swimmers. And it’s not just the age group level. Look at Cal’s problem. Orange Theories is correct. There has to be a balance created.
You have a point, but this is all public record. Yes they are broadcasting it to the swimming world. His past issues are are really now part of this topic. That said the other side is if there are other victims out there and they see this article it may help them to come forward. But really “Proven guilty before…” is only on a Jury and not public or police.
Another scandal at the York YMCA. When will Larry Richardson take responsibility for his failures and resign? So many disastrous things have happened under his watch. He won’t get rid of someone with a record (concerning a minor even) but will gladly fire an otherwise upstanding employee (taking care of a family member dying of cancer) for expressing a concern about a supervisors ethics and treatment of a fellow employee.
Just think about the stuff nobody talks about!
Wasn’t he also coaching for York YMCA team
We all wondered what happened to Coach Brad… He was my coach for two years at York YMCA
Though not listed as a coach.
Brad hasn’t worked at York YMCA in almost a year. He left last summer to go back to school.
And the complaint states it happened in June of 2021.
Well, as long as he makes the Worlds team he can prolly still go.
Who made the world team when suspended by SafeSport? Thought Jordan was still suspended.
To be precise, Trenton Julian was not suspended. He is listed by SafeSport, and has some restrictions placed upon him by SafeSport, but is not suspended.
Fake news deer ol Braddy could never do such a thing
Typo in the last sentence. Replace “bled” with “plex”
I think you mean “pled” or “plead.”
