Kentucky Secures 3rd Verbal for 2023 from Cassie Howell

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

Last fall, Virginia and Florida had the early jump on the field in women’s recruits from the class of 2022. This year, it’s Kentucky leading the way with three out of the dozen-or-so public verbal commitments we’ve seen so far. Madison, Mississippi’s Cassie Howell is the latest of these. She follows Madi McGlothen and Paige Housman, who have made public their intention to swim at Kentucky over the last week. Howell wrote:

“I knew day one how special this program was, and every step of the way, the coaches and team showed me this was the perfect place for me. Can’t wait to be a Wildcat!”

A junior at Madison Central High School, Howell is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. She has won eight Mississippi High School state titles and was twice named MaxPreps Mississippi Swimmer of the Year. At the MHSAA Class 2 Swimming and Diving State Championships last fall, she won the 100 free (50.86) and 100 back (55.28).

Howell does her year-round swimming with Mississippi Makos Swim Team. In December 2020, she won the 50 free (23.92), 100 back (55.06), and 200 back (2:01.30) and placed third in the 100 free (52.72) at the 18&U Winter Championships. This summer, she racked up five state titles (50/100/400 free, 100 back, and 200 IM) at the Mississippi Long Course State Championships, notching PBs in the 50 free (27.69), 400 free (4:39.47), and 200 IM (2:28.29). The same meet two summers ago produced PBs in the 100 free (59.18), 50 back (30.64), 100 back (1:04.37), and 200 back (2:21.28).

In SCY, her best times include:

  • 50 back – 25.61
  • 100 back – 54.31
  • 200 back – 1:58.76
  • 50 free – 23.39
  • 100 free – 50.86
  • 200 free – 1:50.28
  • 200 IM – 2:05.99

The Kentucky women won their first-ever SEC Championship title in 2021, after 40 years of women’s swimming in the SEC. It took 54.14/1:57.28 to final in the 100/200 back at the 2021 conference meet.
