Madi McGlothen Opens Class of 2023 Women’s Recruiting with Verbal to Kentucky

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

USA Swimming Scholastic All-American Madilyn (Madi) McGlothen has kicked off the public commitments for the girls high school class of 2023 with a verbal commitment to the University of Kentucky.

“I chose UK because of the coaching staff’s ambitious goals and high expectations.  I also loved the campus and the support system around the entire student athlete.  Can’t wait to join BBN.  Go Cats!”

McGlothen is a junior at Charleston’s George Washington High School. She swims year-round with YMCA of Kanawha Valley (YKVK) Kraken and specializes in the longer freestyle races, backstroke, and IM. She is a four-time West Virginia High School individual state champion, having won the 500 free and 200 IM as both a freshman in 2020 (5:01.40/2:06.64) and as a sophomore in 2021 (4:56.83/2:03.26). A two-time NISCA High School All-American in the 200 IM and 500 free, she holds the school records in both events.

McGlothen is a Winter Juniors qualifier in the 800 free and 400 IM. She finaled in 200 free (21st), 400 free (18th), 800 free (9th), 200 back (31st), 200 IM (21st), and 400 IM (16th) at USA Swimming Futures Championships-Richmond in July, earning best times in all six events:

  • 200m free – 2:06.26
  • 400m free – 4:26.64
  • 800m free – 9:06.69
  • 200m back – 2:24.27
  • 200m IM – 2:24.04
  • 400m IM – 5:04.09

McGlothen will be a second-generation Wildcat and a third-generation Division I swimmer when she arrives in Lexington in the fall of 2023. Her mother Melissa Olson was one of just a handful of women swimmers in Kentucky history to medal at SECs as a freshman, winning a silver medal in the 400 IM in 1997. An All-American, she went on to hold the 400 IM program record for 16 years. Her grandfather Greg Olson was an All-American swimmer at Bucknell. He was the head coach of the University of Charleston swim team from 1973 until 2002, and he has run the HYCAT swimming program for the last 43 years.

Her best SCY times include:

  • 100 free – 50.99
  • 200 free – 1:50.34
  • 500 free – 4:56.83
  • 1650 free – 16:59.32
  • 200 back – 2:00.54
