During the women’s 200 IM A-final at the 2021 Speedo Summer Championships in Irvine, 14-year-old Teagan O’Dell has broken her first 13-14 National Age Group record (NAG), writing her name on the 200 IM record. During the final, O’Dell placed second at 2:12.53 behind winner Justina Kozan (2:11.96).
This isn’t O’Dell’s first time breaking a NAG, likewise breaking a Missy NAG. O’Dell also holds the 11-12 NAG in this event at 2:18.69, four-tenths faster than Franklin’s former 2008 NAG time of 2:19.12.
O’Dell’s backstroke split was by far the quickest of the field at 32.75, which was 0.13s faster than when two-time Olympian Missy Franklin split back when she set the record in 2009. O’Dell had also swum two-tenths faster on the breast leg than Franklin.
During the Tokyo 2020 Olympic final, only champion Yui Ohashi of Japan (32.50) and runner-up Alex Walsh of the U.S. (32.68) had split faster than O’Dell’s backstroke split from this evening.

O’Dell joins Franklin as the only two swimmers in the 13-14 age group to break the 2:13 barrier. Peering at the 16&U rankings, O’Dell would rank No. 11 all-time. Franklin’s 15-16 best time rests at 2:11.69 from 2010 U.S. Nationals, where she split 32.90 back/30.46 free.

O’Dell has been on fire in Irvine, cracking the all-time top-10 times in four events over the weekend. Here’s a look below at all of her historical age group swims:

Unbelievable swim by a 14 yr old! The backstroke split is incredible. She also broke Missy’s NAG as a 12 yr old so this is no fluke! Look forward to more fast swimming from Teagan!
Among all these young prodigies only Leverenz and Hoff are in the list of 10 best all-time American 200IM swimmers. #7 and #10 respectively. It looks like in this particular event early progress doesn’t mean anything.
The top 10 15/16 swimmers for the 200IM are an amazing group. Looks to me like it says a lot.
8 of the top 10 are world or olympic medalists. Not necessarily in 200 IM.
Alex Walsh (DOB 31 Jul 2001) won the silver medal in the women’s 200 meter individual medley at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Keep up with current events.
We have a US star in the making with Teagan O’Dell.
And it’s funny that she was chasing all week Missy Franklin’s NAG records. She has a lot of similarities with her.
She looks pretty tall. Her backstroke is amazing. Decent butterfly. Good freestyle. And breaststroke is her weakest stroke. But I’ve read in an interview that she looked up to Katinka Hosszu as a swimmer and she wanted to be as strong as possible in all strokes.
It would be nice if USA Swimming could post all the finals of these Speedo Summer Championships on its YouTube channel.
