Americans Regan Smith and Ella Eastin have scratched the 200 fly on day 2 prelims of the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships.
Smith should have a bigger focus on the 100 back, which comes directly after the 200 fly. Eastin continues to take on a light lineup as she swims through mono. She scratched the 400 IM on day 1 and now only has the 200 IM left as an event this week. Their scratches, plus one by 11th seed Emily Overholt of Canada, leave just 10 swimmers left in the women’s 200 fly. No Americans will be bumped out of the final due to the two-per-country rule, with only Hali Flickinger and Katie Drabot still entered.
There weren’t many other high-profile scratches. No one scratched any men’s event nor either of the 100 backstrokes. 16-seed Emily Seebohm scratched the 100 free, which was expected as her main focus, like Smiths, is on the 100 back on day 2.

Is Pickrem in Tokyo? Just wonder why she has steered clear of the 4im after she won bronze at Worlds last summer?!?
Scratched all her events yesterday – not sure if injured or sick or what the deal is there.
Go Riptide Rocket Go!
So Flickinger and Drabot are now guaranteed spots at WCs with Smith scratching.
Andrew was not listed on 100 free? Can´t find his name.. he scratched or did not even enter?
He didn’t enter that event.
He is swimming 100 back today I think
Let’s go lil Regan. 😳💪
Has this meet outlived any useful purpose? Especially with regards to it being part of the WC team selection? 8-9-10 swimmers in many events (200fly, 400IM, d free). It was a shame to watch Greishop and McHugh swim by themselves in B finals this morning. Why bother? Not very good conditions for an elite swim. Same thing having USA d-swimmers all in B heat racing the same people they raced 2 weeks ago, unless they skipped it 2 weeks ago because they didn’t want to swim it twice. Just askin? USA and AUS and CAN …come on get together and find something or better format.
It’s a trip to Japan.
I can see the strengths of this argument. Would the US be better off just making Nationals the big taper meet? Or maybe having a made-for-TV tri with Australia and Japan that didn’t count for much, but was just for spectator enjoyment?
Agreed.
If anything we are seeing how difficult it is to travel around the world to Japan and still swim at your best. I think this is a great learning opportunity for our swimmers and coaches as they prepare for Tokyo 2020.
This meet does seem to be going the way of the PanAm games, which used to be a much higher level competition. It’s a shame that more countries aren’t involved but I guess China, for one, feels that the Asian games are a higher priority. For AUS, CAN, NZL, this competition probably ranks 2nd place this year to the Commonwealth games. Maybe the US should make a formal apology to the queen and get in on that.
What about merging with Jr PanPacs? Combined heats and B finals, separate A finals. It would add energy and numbers
Definitely been saying this for a few days now. It’s just a very crowded competition schedule for everyone but the US (Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, the trials associated with them).
I think this year is especially hard because CG was in Australia. For CAN that’s two trips half way around the world in a year and for AUS CG was always going to be more important as a home games.
Kinda wish McLaughlin would have entered the 2Fly this meet given how good her 2Free was earlier, but I’m sure she’s gunning for a spot on the 4×100 relay and didn’t want to make the same mistake as she did at Nationals.
I wonder what this means for Eastin’s chances at swimming at Worlds. I feel awful for her, she just can’t catch a break.
That’s a bummer for the 3rd place swimmer at nationals that could have swam in Ella’s place and possibly swam fast enough to make worlds! If Ella is that sick, she should have given up her spot on this team – just saying.
Her spot was in the 2IM so the events she’s scratched have been alternate events anyway. Also she earned a trip to Pan Pacs so she even if she can’t swim the 2IM she made the right choice to go-just saying.
Ella qualified for Pan Pacs in the 200 IM. The 200 fly was a bonus event for her. No one is sitting at home because she was entered in the 200 fly.
Looks like nobody saw the username..
BINGO! You’re the only one ever to read into my posts! Just saying 😉
