Watch: Katie Ledecky Smash 200 Free Meet Record in Santa Clara

2017 ARENA PRO SWIM SERIES – SANTA CLARA

The 2017 Arena Pro Swim Series stop in Santa Clara is now in the books, as competition concluded on Sunday night at the George F. Haines Aquatic Center in Santa Clara, California. The 2nd night of competition brought one of the standout performances of the meet: Katie Ledecky‘s 200 free.

Stanford’s Ledecky threw down a blistering 1:55.34, which pushed her all the way up to the top of the 2017 world rankings ahead of Swedish Olympian Michelle Coleman, who swam a 1:55.64 at the Stockholm Open. In doing so, Ledecky also took down the Meet Record in the event. The record had formerly been set at a 1:55.68 by Femke Heemskerk in 2015.

Katie swims hard into the finish. No lazy glide-ins for her.

Will Sjostrom be swimming the 200 free at Worlds?

No.
As written many times Sjostrom will be swimming 50/100 free and fly (four individual races well-spreading in the 8 days of competition), and she won’t swim neither the 800 free relay (whilst in the previous Worlds Sarah swam both heath and final of 800 free relay) because Sweden won’t concur in Budapest.
So a fresher and much more sprint-oriented Sarah: interesting things could happen..

She’s the favorite in the butterfly, but in the freestyle, she has more competition.

You seem to know a lot about Sarah. Can she be the first woman to break 52 in the 100 free?

Like Dee has written in this site, Cate Campbell is the women with the best characteristics to swim under 52.
Anyway, Sjostrom is training differently that in the past and this has already paid dividends with her raw speed.
We’ll see her endurance in the back-half of the 100..

Sjostrom just recently finalized her decision to not compete at 200free n Budapest. Katie’s strong performance in Santa Clara could probably be of some help with that. But Sjostrom isn’t the only one who Ledecky should watch carefully. Federica Pellegrini is suspiciously quiet this season. At 29 this Championships can be one of a few chances left for her to win major title.

Swedish newspapers reported directly after Rio (and also about two years ago) about Sarahs (old) decision not to swim 200 free after Rio, so I don’t know why people seems to think that she “just finalized” her decision. It has nothing to do with Ledecky.

Why do you think swimwear.com and other swimming news sites return to this issue now if it was already said long time ago. Because there was a news made by Sjostrom representative last Wednesday who officially confirmed that she will not race 200 free in Budapest. Has Katie Ledecky had anything to do with that? I think she does. I think that a silver medalist won’t be faster 1:55.2 this year. This time Sarah Sjostrom can beat without losing much energy needed for her sprint races.
Will one stop and pick up $100 bill despite he/she is rushing not to be late at het regular job?

Probably because journalists can’t drop the issue and keep asking her if she’s going to swim it. The same thing before Euros 14, Worlds 15. She says she won’t swim it but people still ask her the same question
