2017 Japanese Nats: Hagino Doubles, Junior World Records Fall on Day 3

JAPAN SWIM 2017 (JAPANESE NATIONALS)

Junior World Records toppled on day 3 of the Japan Swim 2017, as the marks were taken down in the men’s and women’s 200 fly. In the women’s race, Suzaka Hasegawa ran away with the title, posting a blistering 2:06.29 to win gold. That broke the former Junior World Record of 2:06.51, which was set by China’s Yufei Zhang in 2014. Hasegawa is now the fastest woman in the world this year by over half a second, as she surpasses Germany’s Franziska Hentke (2:06.84).

Likewise, Japanese junior standout Nao Horomura took down the Junior World Record in the men’s 200 fly. Horomura placed 3rd in the race, clipping Li Zhuhao’s (CHN) former record time of 1:55.52 with his 1:55.37. That landed him 3rd only to Japanese Olympic medalists Masato Sakai (1:53.71) and Daiya Seto (1:54.28). That makes Sakai and Seto the fastest 2 swimmers in the world this year, while Horomura is just outside of the top 5 at 6th.

Olympic champion Kosuke Hagino impressed with a winning double on day 3. His first victory came in the 400 free, where he held off a latte charge from Naito Ehara to win the race in 3:47.30 to Ehara’s 3:47.74. He followed that up with the fastest 200 IM in the world this year, cranking out a 1:56.01 to surpass China’s Wang Shun (1:56.16). Coming in 2nd behind him was Seto, who picked up another silver and a #5 world ranking with his 1:57.58.
