Last season, Joseph Schooling became the fastest swimmer in history with a 44.01 in the 100 fly, but he narrowly missed becoming the first man to ever break 44. He set out on a mission to become the first NCAA swimmer to do so in 2017, but Florida’s Caeleb Dressel was ready to challenge.
In the NCAA final, Dressel blasted off the final wall to overtake Schooling, posting a new NCAA, U.S. Open, and American Record to win the race in 43.58 to Schooling’s 43.75. Dressel’s closing speed was incredible, as he brought it home in 22.88

What happened to my comment? Dressel went 44.40, not 44.49. Your list is wrong.
really wanted to see joe take down tom shield’s record and win honestly was disappointed when i saw the article about dressel upsetting joe 🙁
Me too?
schooling will school dressel in lcm!!!! caeleb’s lcm best is 52.22 which is far from the 50.39 jo clocked to win olympic gold!
And…..
Shields laughing at Schooling for getting schooled…
Why would he be laughing?
There was an interview a few days ago where Schooling said that he hopes Tom is in the audience to see his record get broken in person, heavily implying that he was going to be the one holding the record at the end of it.
You do realize that Caeleb’s time is also faster than Shield’s time. And why is it funny?
If it couldn’t be Joseph or Jack, I’m glad it was Caleb! What a sprinter; The great part is we as swimming fans will get to watch as these two young men race for at least another three years, weather it is in NCAA or international LCM formats the head to head competitions have really just begun, with Joseph step into the 50 free and Caleb now apparently a world class Butterflyer!
he’s not world class until he breaks 52s in lcm or at least comes close to jo schooling’s olympic record and textile world record
Agree with first part, but there are a number of “world class” swimmers who have not come close to Joe’s records – yet, anyway. That does not make them any less “world class”. They are still in the same ball park.
Top 10 list leaves off Chad le Clos 44.25

Can’t wait for round 3 next year!
Caeleb has been on track to lead the U.S. into the 2020 Olympics with aplomb. Go Gators!!??
