The highly anticipated 200 free matchup between Stanford teammates Simone Manuel and Katie Ledecky at the 2017 Pac-12 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships did not disappoint. Manuel shot off the blocks to take the early lead, but Ledecky made a late charge to try and run her down. At the touch, Manuel did just enough to hold Ledecky off, winning in 1:40.37 to Ledecky’s 1:40.50. Both swimmers were under the previous Meet Record of 1:41.09 set by Cal’s Missy Franklin in 2015.
Lia Neal rounded out the podium in 1:43.62, giving Stanford a sweep of the podium in 2 events so far in tonight’s session
Simone Manuel vs. Katie Ledecky Splits Comparison:

KL for the win at NC’s.
Very solid 1:39&1:40 by Missy and Simone. Can they properly warm up with 3:57 in 400 IM, and shortly after produce 1:40?!
This lady Katie, stays healthy, she goes for 6-7 golds in Tokyo.
Missy is not in this race?
Jack – Missy’s last year of college swimming was 2015-2016. She turned pro after that, and as such is no longer eligible for college competition (like this one).

Well. Will we see a sub 1.40 at NCAAs?
Times are crazy impressive for a warm-up meet. Simone will less die next month with more rest. But KL in 1.40.50 after swimming a 400 IM! Are we sure she would have swum much faster without swimming the 400 IM? I remember what Philippe Lucas said while commenting her swims at 20°15 worlds and he said that KL, Laure Manaudou or that kind of girls, the more they swim, the better they are. What will she swim at NCAAs? The 400 IM or the 200 free on day 2?
Missy’s record? No way it happens. I still wonder how she has swum 1.39.10 one day! Especially considering she’s not… Read more »
47.74 is not a big deal for the swimmer who has more than 1 sec faster personal best. But to have 51.34 after that at the second 100 (?!). That is my friend what is very surprising. Neither before nor later she showed such speed endurance. It is even more surprising if to believe some comments at this forum that her coach didn’t train her for this distance and therefore her home pool records were easily beaten by Stanford swimmers.
I’m really excited for Simone’s 100 free at NCAAs. You’ll be able to close like a freight train in the 100 free. ☺
It’s pretty funny to me that the only thing I can think about when I saw this race was that Manuel was lucky that Ledecky had the 400 IM. When it started Manuel looked as if she was going to crush Ledecky but that last 50… that last 25 was nuts.
