Andreeva Demolishes Russian 200 IM Record, Moves To 2nd In World

Victoriia Andreeva destroyed the Russian 200 IM record today, posting a 2:09.56 that ranks her second in the world this season.

She was previously ranked 23rd in the world, and with this swim she rocketed past world class IMers, including Ye Shiwen, Mireia Belmonte, Ella Eastin, Maya DiRado, Alicia Coutts, and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor. Now, only world record holder Katinka Hosszu is ahead of her in the rankings, with a 2:07.69 from March.

Andreeva demolished the field in the ‘A’ final at the Russian Olympic Trials, taking down her own previous personal best (2:12.19) by two and a half seconds. The previous Russian national record was a 2:11.73 set by Daria Belyakina in the the suit-era 2009 World Championships.

Andreeva will be competing in her second Olympics, but this will be her first time swimming an individual event. Earlier tonight, she took the second slot in the 200 free for another chance to swim in Rio, swimming the event in 1:57.35.

200IM final and 200free final are on the same day on the Olympics schedule. Katie Hoff tried both and missed out on the podium in both despite an American record in the 200free.
