71 Swimmers Carry Their Nations’ Flags at Paris 2024 Olympic Opening Ceremony (Full List)

61 swimmers co-carried their countries’ flags at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games on Friday on the Seine in the heart of Paris.

Instead of the traditional parade on foot, athletes this year are riding down the Seine on boats across a 4 mile route. More athletes from early-events are participating this year because of the lighter strain on the body – both because of the boat doing the work, and because there are seats on the boats.

The number of boats varies depending on who you ask, but is between 85 and 100.

Among the star names on the list are France’s Florent Manaudou, a four-time Olympic medalist; the defending World Champion in the 100 free Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong; and dual Olympic medalist Mykhailo Romanchuk of Ukraine.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were the first where countries were allowed to nominate one male and one female flag bearer at the Olympic Games.

The Seine River is an iconic landmark of Paris, and it is known as the essence of the city that brings both Parisians and tourists together at one memorable place. About 250,000 spectators are expected for the parade.

Competition at the Olympic Games officially began on Wednesday, July 24, with most sports (including swimming) beginning Saturday, July 27th. Competition will go through August 11th.
