5 Things We Noticed On Day 1…

1) Simone Manuel – The Queen of the Duel In The Pool

After anchoring the tie-breaking mixed medley relay to win the 2013 Duel In the Pool, and then following that up with a few dominating performances on the first day of this year’s meet, we can officially crown Simone Manuel the Queen. The sprinter started the meet with a victory in the 100 freestyle, breaking Natalie Coughlin’s American record, and then followed that up with a come-from-behind victory in the 400 medley relay to break the World Record and out-touch the European Squad.

2) Katinka Hosszu Cracks Three US Open Records

The Iron Lady opened the meet with a US Open record in the 400 IM, and then followed that up with two more US Open records before the end of the session. The Hungarian went head to head with Missy Franklin and beat her to win the 200 backstroke and then lead of the medley relay in 55.71. That lead off lowered Natalie Coughlin’s US Open Record from 2002 and set the European Team up to finish under the previous World Record.

3) An Unshaven Kelsi Worrell Breaks An American and World Record!

Kelsi Worrell looked really strong during her individual 100 butterfly and on the women’s World Record breaking 400 medley relay. The swims would have been good enough on their own, but I was blown away when I saw she did not shave for this meet. Had I not seen it with my own eyes, I’m not sure I would have believed it myself, but she really didn’t shave and still managed to break multiple records.

4) Matt Grevers‘ Insane Back Half In The 200 Backstroke

Matt Grevers may have told everyone he is shying away from the 200 backstroke to focus on the 100 freestyle, but his splits today are revealing he may still be better suited for the 200 backstroke. Grevers ran down the field to win the 200 backstroke, but the manner in which he ran them down is the most shocking part of his race. On his final 50, Grevers split 26.44. That time not only was the fastest final 50 split in the field by more than three seconds, his final 50 split was faster than his split on the first 50, 26.54.

5) Cody Miller Holds His Own, Holds Off World Record Holder Daniel Gyurta

Cody Miller is steadily proving himself against the best in the world and managed to do so tonight in the 200 breaststroke. Miller is typically known as a 100 breaststroker, which is encouraging as we head into the 2016 Olympic Trials. Miller was able to hold off the current World Record Holder and Olympic Champion, Daniel Dyurta, finishing with a 2:02.33 to Gyurta’s 2:02.36. Not only did he win, he also came from behind to win which you wouldn’t typically expect from a 100 specialist.

And Grevers must continue to work his 200 back. It will help him to improve the last 15 meters in the 100 back, always his weakest part. If he wants to beat Larkin in Rio.

In terms of shaving or rest, Mr Cordes didn’t look as well as some of his teammates.
Only 58.03 split
Swam a new American record 2 years ago in Glasgow at the same meet in 56.88 flat start. Which would mean a relay split about 56.20/56.30.

Typo: “… Olympic Champion, David Dyurta, finishing….”

Should be Daniel Gyurta.

Perfectly captured TCarroll. Fast swims. Fun meet. Disappointing crowd turnout.
Setting the stage for things to come between now and Rio.
