The final session is here in Federal Way. The Virginia women look to have secured the team title while the battle for second is close between Stanford and Texas.
The 1650 freestyle will kick off the final session in Federal Way. Texas sophomore Jillian Cox is the top seed by over six seconds with a 15:30.33. Cox already won the 500 free on night 2.
Stanford’s Aurora Roghair finished 2nd in the event a year ago and is the #2 seed heading into tonight with a 15:36.43 that she swam at midseason. She won the ACC title in the event with a 15:40.90. Last year’s champion Abby McCulloh of Georgia is the #3 seed in the final tonight with a 15:45.77.
Claire Curzan of Virginia has set herself up for the backstroke sweep as she is the top seed in the 200 back and won the 100 back last night. Curzan touched in a 1:48.01 this morning and has been as fast as 1:46.87. She holds the NCAA and American Records. Curzan earned the 100 win last night just 0.01 ahead of Florida’s Bella Sims. Sims is the #2 seed for tonight’s final after swimming a 1:49.09 this morning. Also in the final is last year’s champion Pheobe Bacon of Wisconsin who swam a 1:49.61, the 4th fastest swim of prelims.
NCAA and American record holder Gretchen Walsh of Virginia touched first in the 100 free this morning with a 45.19, improving her season best by 0.01. Walsh swam a 45.78 in prelims before posting a 44.83 in finals a year ago, a time that stands at the NCAA and American records.
Stanford’s Torri Huske swam the 2nd fastest time of the morning in the 100 free with a 46.54, less than half a second off her season and lifetime best of a 46.09 in finals at ACCs. She swam a 46.93 during ACC prelims so her swim this morning bodes well for tonight.
BYU’s Mackenzie Miller posted the top time in prelims of the 200 breast with a 2:06.12, dropping from her entry time of a 2:06.53. Miller was 7th last night in the 100 breast. Lucy Bell of Stanford entered prelims as the top seed in the 200 breast and swam the 2nd fastest time of the morning with a 2:06.61. Bell did not even swim the event last year as she instead swam the 200 butterfly.
The final individual event of the meet is the 200 fly as Texas fifth year Emma Sticklen posted the top time of prelims with a 1:49.90. That also broke the NCAA meet record. Sticklen has been as fast as 1:49.17 which is just off of Alex Walsh‘s NCAA record of a 1:49.16. Walsh is the #4 seed tonight after swimming a 1:52.18 in prelims. Fellow Virginia teammate Tess Howley had the 2nd fastest time this morning with a 1:51.92 and was 4th a year ago. Last night’s 400 IM winner Caroline Bricker is the #3 seed with a 1:52.13.
The 400 free relay will conclude the meet and it looks to be a key factor for second place. Virginia enters as the top seed by almost three seconds with a 3:05.93. The Cavaliers put two women, Gretchen Walsh and Anna Moesch, in the individual 100 free ‘A’ final while Maxine Parker made the ‘B’ final. The Michigan women are the #2 seed with a 3:08.89 and have two individual 100 free ‘A’ finalists as well with Stephanie Balduccini and Lindsay Flynn.

CURZAN DOUBLE! NCAA AMERICAN AND US OPEN RECORD
I hope Weinstein breaks 4:40 next season…
Grimes is 6th after the early heats so almost certainly won’t score A-final points, not that it matters for UVA. I’ll be very interested to see how Weinstein’s freestyle develops at Cal. tThe three previous big-name female swimmers from Sandpipers all had very similar issues with freestyle at college (and at three different schools).
Cool to see a Nebraska swimmer as the early leader though!
Todd DeSorbo has alot to answer for the performances (or lack thereof) from Katie Grimes.
She has barely been there. Hard to “ruin” someone in 2 1/2 months.
15:49.99 for Gena Jorgenson Nebraska for the early heats!
15:56 for Grimes, 5th at the moment. Gena Jorgenson from Nebraska had a fantastic swim, 15:49.9
SCY women world best vs SCM men world record:
Times reasonably similar, men’s SCM slightly faster in most. Of the 5 events women are faster, 2 are IMs including amazing Ella Eastin’s swim, and then 3 from Gretchen. The event furthest under the men’s time: 100 Fly…
