- Day 1 Finals Recap
It was a quiet morning for the scratch sheet as the first day of individual competition ramps up for the 2025 Division 1 Women’s NCAA Championship.
In the top 50 seeds of each event, the 500 free, 200 IM, and 50 free, nobody scratched. That means the circle-seeded heats are left unchanged, and we get to see showdowns like Torri Huske vs Alex Walsh and Gretchen Walsh vs her own record in the 50 free as planned.
Below the top 50 mark, a handful of athletes scratched each event. The University of Michigan had the most scratches of any team, coming in at three. Florida and Ohio State also had two scratches each.

All these scratches are from schools on Central / Eastern time. I wonder if the coaches let them stay at the hotel and sleep in.
Travelling East to West is not that difficult. If travelling west to east time adjustment would be more of a challenge particularly for prelims.
Scratching a 50 free, other than opening yourself up for 5 relays throughout the weekend, just seems odd.
Whats the general thinking on some of the scratches? is it as simple as one of:
Feels weird to scratch on the first day. Like why not just not sign up.
Relay focus, including the potential to swim all 5 relays by scratching an individual event.
I mean I’m pretty sure it’s exactly the reasons you listed, imo probably in the same order too by likelihood
Most of the time, Swimmers who don’t have a shot at scoring in an event might scratch to focus on one or two individual events in which they have the best opportunity to drop time in, score, or gain in seed. It’s a gamesmanship thing
