Men’s Recap

Georgetown walked away with an early lead following night one of competition at the Big East Conference Championships. Despite not winning any championship titles, the Hoyas displayed a tremendous amount of depth to rack up the points.

Georgetown’s divers delivered for the team, placing five in the final of the men’s 3-meter event and placing 3rd through 7th to bring home a combined 70 points. Nico Santiago led the way, taking 3rd with a score of 359.15 and breaking the Georgetown school record.

The night kicked off with the 800 free relay, which saw Seton Hall’s team of Balint Marosi, Mhael Klimaszewski, Jaden Bunt and Kevin Cary throw down a time of 6:27.12 to secure the victory for the Pirates. They raced into the wall over five seconds ahead of runner-up Georgetown, whose team of Conor Jellig, Jack Januario, Ronan Krauss and Jack Brearton posted a school record time of 6:32.22.

The 200 medley relay went to Xavier University, as the team of Matt Fralic, Ethan Saunders, Aiden Leamer and Gage Hannewyk blasted into the wall in 1:27.39. They just narrowly edged out Seton Hall by .2 to claim the Musketeers’ first championship title of the weekend.

Women’s Recap

The Xavier women are doing their best to give 10-time defending champions Villanova a run for their money, taking a narrow lead of just four points following the first night of competition.

Villanova prevailed in the 800 free relay in 7:15.66, thanks to the squad of Riley Kudlac, Amylia Higgins, Anna Farley and Martina Lonati, but the Musketeers were chasing them down at the end, finishing just .13 behind. Xavier’s Olivia Oyster, Norah Simich, Erin Ritz and Alexis Worrall threw down a 7:15.79 to take 2nd, breaking the school record in the process.

Xavier bounced back to claim the championship title in the 200 medley relay; Reese Turner, Jordyn Libler, Ritz and Oyster broke another school record with their time of 1:39.52 and were just .03 off of the pool record in the event. The race proved to be a battle with Georgetown, as the Hoyas and the Musketeers vied for the lead in the pool before Georgetown took the runner-up spot and set a new school record in 1:39.59, just .07 behind.

Meanwhile Villanova finished 4th in 1:40.53, which was enough to land them in the #2 spot in the overall rankings following the competition.

The women’s team standings through the first two events are incredibly close, with just 18 points separating 1st and 4th place.
