Day 3 Prelims Heat Sheet
If you were hoping to see Gretchen Walsh try to better her NCAA record in the 100 fly, then I’m sorry to disappoint you as the “Everything Record” Holder (trademark?) has scratched out of the event. The top seed by nearly a second and a half will not have an individual race this morning. However, that said, there will be a Walsh in the 100 fly as her sister, Alex Walsh, has scratched out of the 200 free, where she was the #2 seed, and instead will look to improve upon her 18th seed in the 100 fly.
UVA saw a large contingent pull out of the 200 free, as in addition to A. Walsh, both Leah Hayes (#10) and Katie Grimes (#16) also withdrew. Their scratches should not come as much of a surprise as the pair are the 3rd and 1st seeds in the 400 IM, respectively. With Stanford Cardinal Lillie Nordmann also withdrawing from the 200 free in favor of the 100 fly, the women’s 200 free is missing four of its top 16, meaning the event is ripe for those lower-seeded to jump up into the A and B finals tonight.
On the men’s side, the 200 free plays a very similar story as a pair of top 8 seeds, both from Cal, have opted not to take on the 200 free. The #2 and #5 seeds, Destin Lasco and Gabe Jett, will not race the event, hoping that teammates Lucas Henveaux, Robin Hanson, and Trent Frandson can take their place in the A- Final. Andrei Minakov of Stanford and David King of UVA have also pulled out of the event, with Minakov looking to improve upon his #3 seed in the 100 fly.
While there were no top 8 scratches in the 400 IM, both #11 seeds, Mira Szimcsak and Daniel Diehl, have pulled out of the event, with Diehl instead focusing on the 200 free, where he is the #10 seed.
It should be noted that Brooks Curry does not appear in the first heat of the 200 free.
P.S. Also in consideration for the title: Daniel not Diehling with the 400 IM

hi stupid question but if a swimmer doesn’t swim an event at conference champs, can they still swim the event at ncaa’s, or as long as they have a qualifying time can they swim it at ncaa’s? thank you all!
As long as they have the time, they can do it at NCAA’s. If what you said was what happens, A. Walsh would be doing the 100 fly at NCAAs which would be…a choice. If you’re as good as the Walsh sisters, you have A cuts in a ton of things so at conference you can really do what you want.
thats what i figured but i dont really know too much about college swimming (im trying to educate myself) so id rather just ask. thank you!
A. Walsh just doing what she wants this week lol. 100 fly is like her 8th best event.
If it turns out the whole Brooks Curry thing was just a troll, I’m a little disappointed and give Durden and Marsh a C- on their execution. If you’re going to fallaciously put a guy on the psych sheet just to blowup the SwimSwam comment section, Curry is only the 5th funniest option they had. Try to be better in the future, Daves! Maybe you should sign up for improv classes at your local rec center to help hone your funny bones?
5. Brooks Curry
4. Hunter Armstrong
3. Pieter Coetze
2. Ryan Hoffer
1. Daniel Wiffen
I also give myself a C- for not thinking to put Aaron Shackell #1 on the list. 😢
OMG WTH is wrong with me?!!?! It’s so obvious!!! 🤦♂️
There’s no way they just added Curry to the psych sheet to troll everyone. You give the SwimSwam comment section way too much credit if you think Dave & David are making moves just to stir up drama here.
As Cal often explains it, they sometimes don’t know up until the first race whether guys are going to be eligible or not. I would guess that their explanation would be something like “we were hoping but weren’t sure so we entered him just in case.”
Possible that he’ll still race a Last Chance meet.
But no definitive answer on the improv classes?
No the #1 option would have been to put our lord and savior dean Ferris on the psych sheet
The consideration title would have been better.
Safe to assume that Brooks Curry won’t be swimming any events at this meet? Anybody have any info on this?
Yeah, gonna need a story on this weirdness

Is he at the meet?
Not sure. Coleman is on deck, I’ll ask him to watch.
Alex Walsh swimming the 100 fly is kind of surprising to me
Should be fun! She’s split 49 several times on medley relays but not swum the actual event in recent years
Is the 100 back and 100 free her other events then? Maybe she is trying to go 47?
47 is definitely her goal
In other news, Kelsey Wog just retired.
