The Opening Ceremony of the 29th Summer Universiade, also known as the World University Games (WUGs), took place today, August 19th in Chinese Taipei. Among those athletes walking out to meet the crowd was Scottish swimmer Cameron Brodie who was selected as flag bearer of Great Britain and Northern Ireland during the ceremony.
When the flag bearer announcement was made a few days ago, Brodie stated, “What an honour, it came as a total surprise. To get the call, ahead of so many incredible athletes – I was a little bit in awe of them, the fact that I’ll be leading them all out at the Opening Ceremony – I’m buzzing for it.
“I’ve never been to an Opening Ceremony before, so this will be a new experience and to be flag bearer will be even better.”
Training at the University of Stirling among the likes of Olympians Ross Murdoch and Duncan Scott, Brodie entered the international swimming scene at the 2014 Commonwealth Games where he was a prelims member of the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay that ultimately won silver. He followed that up with a British national title in the 200m butterfly in 2015.
Brodie is one of the 110 athletes representing Great Britain at this year’s Games, which includes 16 swimmers.
