There will be just three events contested tonight at the Maria Lenk Trophy, with the men’s 100 free, the women’s 200 fly and the men’s 200 breast. The men’s 100 free will be hotly contested, as all six Brazilians in the final are capable of eclipsing the FINA ‘A’ standard, and four of them did so this morning. Marcelo Chierighini (48.20) and Nicolas Oliveira (48.30) are the top two seeds heading into tonight, but could lose their Olympic spot if another swimmer was to beat them and take out their morning time (or both). After finishing 6th this morning in 48.97, world record holder Cesar Cielo scratched this event tonight, claiming he wants to focus on the 50 free later on. The women’s 200 fly currently has zero qualifiers and will be in tough to get any tonight with top seeded Joanna Maranhao going over two seconds slower than the cut this morning. The men’s 200 breast already has one qualifier from the Brazil Open (Thiago Simon) and one from this morning (Tales Cerdeira) so unless we see an upset tonight they’ll both be on their way to Rio.

Men’s 100 Freestyle – Final

Though both going slower than this morning, Marcelo Chierighini and Nicolas Oliveira managed to maintain their positions in the top-2, earning them individual spots in this event in Rio. Joao De Lucca was 4th in 48.68, also a little off his morning swim, but earns relay duties nonetheless. 5th place finisher Matheus Santana also earns a relay position based off his swim of 48.71 at the Brazil Open. Canadian Santo Condorelli was the top international finisher in the field claiming 3rd, while Argentina’s Federico Grabich was 7th.

Women’s 200 Butterfly – Final

Shuang Li of China touched first for the win in the women’s 200 fly, taking nearly seven seconds off from prelims in 2:11.46. Joanna Maranhao was the top Brazilian in the field posting a time of 2:11.75, missing the standard of 2:09.33. Maranhao could potentially swim this event at the Olympics as she has already qualified in both the 200 and 400 IM. Argentina’s Virginia Bardach was 3rd in 2:12.08, and Maria Pessanha was the 2nd fastest Brazilian in 2:17.11.

Men’s 200 Breaststroke – Final

Despite finishing 3rd and 4th in the final tonight, Thiago Simon and Tales Cerdeira will be Brazil’s representatives in the 200 breaststroke at the Olympics. Simon’s time of 2:11.29 from the Brazil Open and Cerdeira’s time of 2:10.99 from this morning held up over Thiago Pereira‘s winning time of 2:11.86 tonight. Pereira didn’t make the FINA ‘A’ standard of 2:11.66 anyway. Felipe Franca was 2nd in 2:12.03, followed by Simon (2:12.63) and Cerdeira (2:12.72).
