Day 4 of the 2016 LA Invite saw Yuliya Efimova grab another event win in her first meet since FINA lifted her ban for testing positive for the banned substance Meldonium. Last night, she won the 200 breast, and she completed the sweep of the breaststroke events at this meet with a win in the 100. Efimova is currently ranked 2nd in the world this year with a season-best 1:05.70, and she was just 6 tenths shy of that to win tonight with a 1:06.30.
Cal’s Farida Osman racked up another win tonight after taking the 50 free title yesterday. This time she was the fastest woman in the 100 fly, clocking a 58.45 to give herself the only sub-1:00 swim of the final. Rounding out the top 3 with a pair of 1:01s were Liliana Ibanez (1:01.34) and Katrina Konopka (1:01.75).
On the men’s side, Long Guitierrez and Chatham Dobbs put on a show in the 100 fly, finishing within a tenth of each other. Guitierrez was a tad faster, getting his hands on the wall first in 53.31 to Dobbs’ 53.57. Coming in 3rd was Dobbs’ Arizona teammate Renny Richmond with a 54.36.
In similar fashion, Blair Bish and Jason Block battled in the men’s 100 breast, separated by hundredths at the finish. Bish got to the wall a nail ahead of Block, turning in a time of 1:01.81 to Block’s 1:01.85. Following closely in a tight race for 3rd were Gage Crosby (1:02.62) and Glenn Snyders (1:02.66).

I like Yulia. I think she was and is unfairly portrayed. Not a lot of people know about the specific details of her case so they just assume that her ban was for a willful intention to use PED. The first time was for taking supplements that contained BHEA. They ruled it as unintentional so she only got a 14 month ban not the full 2 year ban. The meldonium was only recently added to the ban list since January 2016. Meldonium is used widely in Russia, the Baltic states, eastern Europe. The anti-doping authorities are walking back on that now because they don’t how long Meldonium stays in your system.
How come everyone picks on yuliya because she is Russian?!?!? When there was an american doper everyone was like “thats not fair!!!!” yuliya swims and lives in America. Thats also where she got the first drug. Gosh you people have no life.
Yuliya- no stop in Rio – go home – there’s a syringe with your name on it there….

Not likely to happen, but based on the findings of McLaren Report, the entire Russian Olympic program (all sports) should be banned from Rio 2016.
Efimova is likely going to medal and someone is going to have to suffer because of Finas corruption

The hatred everyone throws at Yulia is hilarious yet kind of old.

Yes. None of this directly impacts anyone in the comment section, at least as far as I know.
And I mean, some of the most high-profile “drug cheats” of all time never failed any tests. That’s why I can’t get too huffy about this. (I remember when A-Rod was held up as the “clean” athlete that could erase Barry Bonds’s tainted records from the books. And Lance Armstrong chastising all those who dare impinge his holy cleanliness. And so on and so forth.)
