After seeing freestyle, breaststroke, IM and butterfly events contested at these Paralympic Trials, today we will see the backstroke events. Both the 50 and 100 backstroke will be swum this morning, leading off the session. Tonight at finals the 100 backstroke will lead things off with the 50 back finishing things up. The 50 back is for classes S1-5, and the 100 can be competed by S1-2 and S6-14 classes.
Women’s 50m Backstroke PARA S1-5 Multi-Class Prelims

Fresh off two worlds yesterday in the 50 fly, Tammy Cunnington came away with the top seed in the women’s 50 fly, going 1:12.91 to move into 3rd in the world in the S4 category for 2016. Emily De Boer was 2nd in 1:06.06, and Valerie Drapeau was 3rd in 1:06.92. Both women are in the S5 category. Those swims move them into 8th and 9th in the world respectively.
Men’s 50m Backstroke PARA S1-5 Multi-Class Prelims

Riley McLean grabbed the top spot in the men’s 50 back, putting up a time of 58.78 to put him 8th in the world in the S4 category this year. Danial Murphy was 2nd in 54.61, and Andrew Cooke was right behind for 3rd in 55.93. Those times puts them 15th and 17th in the S5 world rankings for 2016.
Women’s 100m Backstroke PARA S1-2, S6-14 Multi-Class Prelims

Aurelie Rivard took the top spot in the women’s 100 backstroke, touching in 1:12.57 for the top seed tonight. The time puts her 4th in the world for 2016 in the S10 category. Abi Tripp (1:26.47) and Camille Berube (1:26.81) were 2nd and 3rd respectively, both swimming in the S8 category. Those times put them 6th and 7th in the world. 12th place finisher Danielle Kisser set a new Canadian record this morning in the S6 category, clocking 1:48.38.

Nicolas Turbide took the top spot in the men’s 100 back prelims this morning, clocking a very swift 1:01.17. Turbide’s time launches him into 2nd in the world rankings in the S13 category. Gordie Michie (1:04.46) and Benoit Huot (1:02.04) were 2nd and 3rd respectively. Michie moves into 3rd in the world in the S14 category, while Huot also moves into 3rd in the world in the S10 category.
