After barely missing out on earning a spot on the Olympic team early in the meet, both Katerine Savard and Kennedy Goss made the criteria to gain Olympic nomination for the Rio Games this summer.
Savard and Goss will be heading to Rio as relay-only swimmers unless they qualify later on in individual events, after they finished third and fourth respectively in the 200m freestyle.
Savard was a 1:58.17 for third whereas Goss was a 1:58.26 right behind her for fourth.
Following Savard and Goss’ swims, Canadian distance-star Ryan Cochrane punched in his ticket to Rio with a 3:48 400m freestyle. The time got Cochrane under the FINA ‘A’ standard and makes him the second Canadian male to qualify for the team after Javier Acevedo did it last night.
Cochrane will also be swimming the 1500m freestyle this meet where he’s the favourite, and assuming he makes the team, a global threat for a medal this summer.
Also sporting solid performances were both Kierra Smith and Rachel Nicol. The two breaststrokers both made it under the FINA ‘A’ cut and posted very strong times. Nicol’s prelim swim ranks her 12th in the world this year with Smith’s winning time putting her at the 13th slot.
One more man followed suit to make the team as Ashton Baumann, son of multi-time Olympic gold medallist Alex Baumann, dropped a huge chunk of time in order to clock in a 2:10 200m breaststroke and claim gold.
Baumann is the third male swimmer to make the team after both Acevedo and Cochrane.
