Mt Hood Community College Aquatic Center hosted one of the four Speedo Sectionals meets that took place this past weekend. The Mt Hood Sectionals meet saw some really phenomenal racing by junior swimmers. On the first two days of the meet, Portland Aquatic Club 16-year-old Mena Boardman was on fire. Boardman won an individual event on each of the first two days of the meet. She kicked things off with a huge personal best of 56.62 en route to winning the women’s 100 free. Boardman entered the day with a personal best of 57.43, marking an improvement of nearly a second with her finals swim. She showed her speed off in that race, taking it out in a speedy 27.04 on the first 50.
Boardman would go on to win the women’s 100 back on Friday, clipping her previous best of 1:02.59. As opposed to her 100 free, Boardman’s 100 back was a more conservative race, where she went out in 30.49 on the first 50, then came home in 31.65, for a difference of just 1.16 seconds between her 50s.
King Aquatic Club 18-year-old Camden Doane had a great showing on the first two days of the meet as well. Doane won the women’s 200 fly in 2:13.80. That swim comes in just 0.09 seconds off her personal best. Doane had swum the 100 free earlier that day, where she clocked a new career best of 56.71 in prelims before taking 2nd in finals with a 57.04.
Following her victory in the 200 fly on Thursday, Doane would go on to win the women’s 200 free on Friday, swimming a 2:02.05. That swim came in just 0.50 seconds off her career best of 2:01.55.
Rising Penn State sophomore Tylor Kim, representing his home club of Lake Oswego Swim Club, put up a huge performance in the men’s 100 free on Thursday night, throwing down a 49.98 to win the race. That swim was not only Kim’s first time under 50 seconds in the event, it was also his first time under 51 seconds.
Spokane Waves Aquatic Team 18-year-old Michael Hochwalt was another top performer over the first two days of the meet. Hochwalt kicked things off by winning the men’s 200 fly with a 2:00.12, which is a bit off his career best of 1:58.87. The rising Arizona State freshman set his personal best last summer at Junior Nationals. Hochwalt went on to win the men’s 400 IM in 4:23.74 on Friday. His personal best in the 400 IM is 4:19.70, which he set at Federal Way Sectionals in March of this year.
King Aquatic Club 16-year-old Aiden Hammer put up a great swim in the men’s 200 free, winning the race at Friday night’s finals session with a 1:51.98. Hammer entered the day with a personal best of 1:52.15, going under 1:52 for the first time. He swam a tightly-split race, going 26.86 on the first 50, then splitting 28.26, 28.40, and 28.46 respectively the rest of the way.
In the men’s 200 breast, 16-year-old Andrew Eubanks (The Dolphins Portland Swimming) clocked a 2:16.02 to win the race. That swim came in just a tick off his career best of 2:15.83. Phoenix Swim Club 17-year-old Theodore Neilson had a massive swim for 2nd, swimming a 2:16.82. Neilson came into the day with a personal best of 2:21.06, marking a huge 4.24-second drop from that time with his finals performance.
