16-Year-Old Brendan Whitfield Hits PR 1:46.7 200 BK in Christiansburg

Teams from across the eastern zone met in Christiansburg, Va., for a sectional championships this weekend. The meet was designed to replace the Ithaca and Buffalo Sectional meets, which were both canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the final two days of competition, Delaware Swim Team 15-year-old Georgia Colborn raced to three victories. She clocked a lifetime best in the 100 fly, hitting a 54.35, while she collected wins in the 200 fly (2:04.87) and 100 back (56.16), too.

After winning the 50 free on Friday, Virginia Tech alum and H2okies swimmer Lucas Bureau posted wins in the 100 fly (47.13) and 100 free (43.73) between Saturday and Sunday. He was tenths away from lifetime bests in both.

Lynchburg YMCA’s Brendan Whitfield had a fantastic swim in the 200 back, his only win of the weekend. Whitfield came in with a lifetime best of 1:49.50, which he dropped down to 1:47.39 in prelims. In finals, the 16-year-old dropped even more time, ending up with a new best of 1:46.78.

Greenwich YMCA Marlins’ Alexandra Bastone added to her win total after claiming the 500 free on Friday. She put up two more victories, going 4:26.65 in the 400 IM and 1:50.67 in the 200 free, dropping five seconds off of her pre-meet best in the former.

In the 200 free, 14-year-old Sidney Arcella was second in 1:51.14, well ahead of the 1:54.81 she came into the meet with. The 50 free champ this weekend then broke 51 for the first time in the 100 free, posting a winning time of 50.75.
