University of Nevada Las Vegas Grab Two Big Wins At Home

The 2014 UNLV Fall Invite wrapped up tonight bringing with it more school records for University of Pacific and a mens and womens win for the University of Nevada Las Vegas.

Marga Verger Gourson continued her domination of the freestyle events taking another win for Pacific with a 16:09.06 in the 1650 freestyle. That time happened to break the previous University of Pacific record by over a full minute. At the 500 yard mark she was a 4:52.74, slower than she was in the 500 freestyle final but also faster than the UofP record heading into the meet. She also broke the 1000 yard freestyle school record on the way to 1650 with a split of 9:47.14.

Matt Roe of UNLV took the men’s 1650 freestyle final in 15:47.16, finishing well ahead of second place finisher Brandon Chandler from UofP. Chandler was a 16:01.32.

Jessica Wong grabbed another win for UNLV as she posted a 2:00.00 in the 200 yard back to almost match the 1:59.97 she swam in prelims. With that swim she took down Pacific’s Haley Preston who made a huge charger on the last 50 but wasn’t able to catch Wong, instead finishing second in 2:00.57.

Winning another event for UNLV was Henrique Machado. Machado took out the 200 back in 1:46.25 to beat Curtis Klein. Klein finished two seconds behind him in 1:48.48, although was able to hold off Collin Baldacci of UNLV by a decent margin spoiling the 1-2 finish.

In the women’s 100 freestyle it was Julia Fehevari who took home the gold with a 50.21. She won the race by over a second as Caitlin Denise finished behind her in 51.31, just slightly out-touching Michelle Troup of UNLV who grabbed the bronze with a 51.41.

The men’s 100 freestyle final went to Tom Paco-Pedroni in a very swift 43.27. Paco-Pedroni displayed the best 100 freestyle of the meet as Or Sabatier of UNLV was second in 44.19. Third overall was Caio Di Hanaoka Dini in 45.10 solidifying the 1-2-3 UNLV finish.

Kendall Swanson won the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.25 over Lina Rathsack’s 2:14.64. Jessica Legge snuck in for the bronze medal with a 2:16.93 narrowly taking down Urte Kazakeviciute who was fourth with a 2:17.01.

The men’s 200 breaststroke was a total domination done by Boris Kulizhnikov. Kulizhnikov was a 2:01.61 to win the race with 18-year-old Jonathan Pun earning himself a second place finish with a 2:06.15 performance. The race for second was a tight one with Tim Ferris just being pushed out to a third place spot as he was one one-hundredth behind Pun in 2:06.16.

New Mexico State’s Dorottya Lennert rocked a 2:00.51 200 fly to grab a win for her team as Alexis Juergens settled for second in 2:03.97. Rounding out the top three was UNLV’s Goezde Tekin who was a 2:04.71 for the third spot.

Avi Cohen won the last individual event of the meet for UNLV with a 1:48.59 in the 200 fly to be the only swimmer under 1:50. Joseph Riggert was his closest competitor in 1:50.77 followed by Collin Baldacci in 1:52.90. The boys managed to secure a 1-2-3 finish for the UNLV team.

The 4×100 freestyle relays gave way to two more UNLV wins to set in stone their championship victories. With 845.5 points over New Mexico’s 597 the women won. The men put up a massive 1137.5 points over University of the Pacific’s 750 to take home the win.
