Kirsty Coventry Breaks African Record At Arena Pro Swim Charlotte

Olympic Gold Medalist and former World Record holder, Kirsty Coventry, is making a splash in her comeback season. After more than a two year hiatus from the sport, Coventry is back to her record-breaking ways.

On the second day of the 2015 Arena Pro Swim meet in Charlotte, Coventry broke the Zimbabwean record in the finals of the 50 backstroke with her time of 28.23. Coventry swam the old Zimbabwean and African Record of 28.31 in 2012.

Kirsty Coventry now holds the African record in both the 50 long course meter and 50 short course meter backstrokes.

Coventry’s time of 28.23 currently stands as the 12th fastest time in the world this year. She is currently training under David Marsh with SwimMAC Team Elite.

The report is not entirely correct. Coventry’s previous best was actually a 28.31 from Jan 2012 at a Durban meet in South Africa. Though the widely recognized opening split from Beijing of 28.87 is one of her best times. For Coughlin too, 28.30 split at Melbourne 2007 on her way to wr was her pb until recently when she went 28.09
