USA Swimming has released the official psych sheets for the 2014 Men’s NCAA Championships, and as we predicted yesterday, the cut line fell right in the midst of the ’30’ line, with all but two of those 30 line swimmers being invited to NCAA’s.
- Men’s official psych sheet (Updated 3/25).
- Men’s Invited List – By Team (Updated 3/21).
- Institutions Eligible for relays.
- NCAA DI Men Official Alternate List (Updated 3/25).
There’s still a lot of diving spots to be awarded and can bring up to 4 uninvited alternates, but for swimmers, the following teams have 10 or more individuals qualified:
- Texas – 16
- Cal – 16
- Florida – 14
- Michigan – 13
- Georgia – 11
- Arizona – 10
To see more breakdowns, check out our psych sheet scoring here.
The meet will run from March 27th-29th in Austin, Texas.
Okay, could someone explain to me how the invitation process works? Like I understand how the top 30 guys get picked, but how does it work for the guys below them? Because some of those times aren’t top 40ish times.
swagswagswimswim – those are simply additional entries for guys already invited somewhere else. Think more along the lines of “bonus entries”. Once you’re invited, you can swim up to three individual events where you have hit the “B” standard
So just for fun I put Michael Andrew’s best times in with the psych sheet to see where he would fall in and here’s what I came up with from what I could find on USA Swimming:
41st in the 100 breast
43rd in the 50 free
tied for 57th in the 100 free
47th in the 200 back
45th in the 100 fly
45th in the 200 fly
and 67th in the 200 IM
I think he could do some real damage in the 200 breast. He hasn’t gone a best time in that event in a little while and he’s only at a 2:03 right now.
Wow that’s interesting, thanks for doing that. With his new 2Fly record he’s moved up to 41st in that event too. My sense was that his best events this season have been the 100 breast and 2Fly and your stats seem to confirm that, although it’s close because he’s so strong across the board.
You are being to hasty jumping to conclusions at what he would be ranked. Keep in mind that is the psyche sheet which only includes people who will actually be swimming in the meet. If you compare his best time in the 100 breast he would be ranked around 90th and his 200 fly would put him in the upper 60s. His 50 would not even be close to the top 100.
For a team like Texas that have 16 swimmers and 4 divers (divers count half) and reach the max of 18, can they still have 4 alternates?
Good sport – per the rules, no, once a swimmer has raced in a prelims or a finals of a relay, they count toward the 18.
There is a little contradiction in this rule, which makes things murky, but that part of it is pretty clearly spelled out.
Goooooo Gators!!
