100m Backstroke World Record From Australian Ellie Cole Begins 2015 IPC World Championships in Glasgow

Australian Paralympic superstar Ellie Cole has broken the first World Record, of what is expected to be many, of the 2015 IPC Swimming World Championships in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday morning.

Cole swam a 1:08.89 in the final heat of the women’s S9 100 meter backstroke to crush Stephanie Dixon’s seven-year old World Record of 1:09.30 in the event. Dixon also previously held the Championship Record at a 1:09.61 from 2006.

The 23-year old from Melbourne was more than two seconds clear of the rest of the field, and should be a significant favorite in the finals this evening.

Cole won six Olympic medals at the 2102 Paralympics in London, of which four were gold.

Among other noteworthy swims in the preliminary session was a 28.03 in the S10 50-meter freestyle from Canadian Aurelie Rivard. That broke the Canadian and “Americas” record previously held by Summer Mortimer, who was a 28.10 at the 2012 Paralympics.

To add a little fuel to the fire of what should be a very competitive final, the World Record holder Sophie Pascoe will swim to one side of Rivard in finals after a 28.31 in prelims; and the aforementioned Mortimer, who has changed allegiance and now swims for the Netherlands, will swim to her other side after a 28.51.

Rivard said after the race that her goal is to go faster than 28 seconds.

A full recap of the day’s action will come following the finals session.
