West Florida Adds D2 Swimming Program

The University of West Florida has announced that they will be adding a women’s swimming & diving team beginning in the fall of 2013, with a national search for a new head coach beginning immediately.

This will be the 14th varsity program for the Division 2 school located in Pensacola, Florida. It has 12,000 students, and sits on one of the largest campuses (by area) in the state of Florida; this addition is part of its plan to parlay that huge space into a more traditional university experience.

The Argonauts will already have a huge advantage in division 2, thanks to a 50-meter indoor pool that received a $4.5 million overhaul in 2011 that will rank with the best in D2. It’s already become a local center for high school and USA Swimming meets, so it will be a familiar setting for potential recruits from the area.
