So far these Olympic Trials haven’t been going exactly according to plan for Ryan Cochrane despite the fact that he’s now set to represent Canada at his third Olympic Games.
After an eighth place finish in the 200m freestyle, Cochrane won the 400 freestyle in 3:48.54 in order to dip under the FINA ‘A’ qualifying time and secure his spot on Canada’s Olympic team.
While the time qualified him for Rio, it was a few seconds slower than what he expected of himself in that race. His 400 was slower than he thought, but that doesn’t change Cochrane’s perception on what he can go in the 1500.
Assuming he makes the final, Cochrane will be able to swim two 1500s here in Toronto. So far this season, he put forth a 15:12.02 1500 free at the Victorian Open Championships in Australia. That time ranks him 24th in the world this season.
As the Canadian record holder and two-time Olympic medalist in this event, Cochrane can easily win the 1500 at trials. The time won’t necessarily be a direct indication of his performance – Cochrane has proven to swim faster when he’s racing among other athletes in the same time-range as him.
Cochrane’s American rival Connor Jaeger is also swimming at trials, however won’t be able to race Cochrane in the final due to his status as a foreign athlete.
