Villanova Sweeps La Salle After Quick Invite Turnaround

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – It was a quick turnaround that the Wildcats faced, but they handled it like experts. After a three-day competition at West Virginia last week, Villanova swim and dive was back in action on Tuesday, taking on La Salle. Both the men’s and women’s teams picked up victories on the day, with the men winning 172-126 and the women winning 187-106.

Women’s Team
Villanova was dominant in the pool. They took first overall in the first 14 events before conceding the final two to La Salle. 

Fresh off a BIG EAST Female Athlete of the Week honor, Kelly Montesi earned wins in the 1000 freestyle and the 200 butterfly. Nicole Welch took first in the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. Villanova swept the 200, with Emily Provenzo taking second and Andrea Fong claiming third. Grace WielarRayann JaryszakAbbey BerlocoMilly RoutledgeKaitlin GravellPerri Stahl and Micaela Grassi all finished first in their respective events. 

The 200 medley relay team took first and second. Overall, the Wildcats placed in the top three 27 times.

Men’s Team
It was a breakout day for the men’s team as they earned their first win of the season. They took first overall in 10 events.

Justin Cucchi was the big winner of the day, claiming first in the 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. Jake McIntrye touched first in the 1000 freestyle, while John Davidson finished second. Davidson would later claim victory in the 500, with McIntyre taking second. Andrew Kelley won the 100 backstroke, but also took third in the 200 backstroke. 

Francis Prikasky took the 100 breaststroke and placed second in the 200 breaststroke. Stephen Krecsmar was the top finisher in the 50 freestyle, but also took second in the 100 free. Villanova also took first in the 200 medley relay. Michael Ackert took first in the 1m dive.

PHILADELPHIA – Women’s swimming & diving fell to Villanova 187-106 on Tuesday. La Salle was led by sophomore Phoebe Shaya, who took first in both of her events on the boards.

MEET NOTES

  • Shaya recorded 271.35 points in the 3-meter dive and 255.98 points in the 1-meter.
  • Rookie highlight: Freshman Lauren Fenn placed second in the 100 Back with a time of 59.52.
  • The other second-place result for the women came via senior Carrie Horan, who touched in 2:30.80 in the 200 Breast.
  • The Explorers top team result came in the 200 Free Relay, where sophomores Anne MoserSarah Wyant and Sara Rizzetto and freshman Brynn Peterson clocked 1:40.26.

UP NEXT

  • The final meet of the Fall semester will take place in Lewisburg. La Salle competes in the Bucknell Invitational from December 6th to 8th.

PHILADELPHIA – Men’s swimming & diving dropped its contest to Villanova on Tuesday, 172-126. The Explorers had a handful of first-place finishes on the afternoon, including two from sophomore Zachary Wolbert.

MEET NOTES

  • Wolbert’s top times came in the 100 Fly (51.43) and 200 Fly (1:52.60). He also touched second in the 200 IM.
  • Another first-place result came via senior Christoff Ras who beat out everyone in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:08.12. He also recorded a second-place time in the 100 Breast.
  • Freshman Sam Henninger was again among the leaders on the boards. The rookie finished with 302.93 points in the 3-meter dive, good for first.
  • Junior Daniel Johnson also came in first for the men’s team in the 100 Free with a time of 47.28.
  • Johnson was part of a 200 Free Relay team, which included senior Marcus Forsgren, sophomore Ian Venter and freshman Alex Kuriawa, that claimed the top spot by clocking at 1:27.62.
  • Other notable finishes include second-place finishes for seniors Norm Gregory (200 Free) and Forsgren (50 Free) and Venter (100 Back, 200 Back).
