Riptide 16-year-old Megan Hutchins has announced her verbal commitment to swim at the University of Kentucky starting in the fall of 2023. Hutchins is a versatile talent, whose primary stroke is backstroke, but could provide a boost to the Wildcats’ roster in a number of areas.
In the summer of 2021, Hutchins competed at the Speedo Summer Championships – West, qualifying for the B final in the 200 back, and the C final of the 400 IM. Earlier in the summer, Hutchins won the 200 back at the 2021 MN UofM Speedo Sectional Championships, swimming her lifetime best of 2:15.66 (LCM).
Here are Hutchins’ SCY personal bests:
- 200 free – 1:54.09
- 500 free – 4:52.91
- 50 back – 26.07
- 100 back – 55.07
- 200 back – 1:58.32
- 100 fly – 56.91
- 200 fly – 2:03.87
- 200 IM – 2:00.19
- 400 IM – 4:16.93
LCM:
- 100 back – 1:04.52
- 200 back – 2:15.66
Hutchins will be able to provide good depth to Kentucky’s roster, whichever events she ends up racing for the Wildcats. Her 200 back best time of 1:58.32 is just a second off the 1:57.28 it took to qualify for finals at the 2021 SEC Championships. Similarly, her 4:16.93 400 IM is just off the 4:15.94 it took to make finals last season, and her 2:00.19 200 IM is just a second off the 1:59.16 it took for 24th.
