The California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) has named Ventura College swimmer Henry Chung as its male athlete of the year in any sport.
The honor goes to the top male and female athlete in the state among 106 colleges, nearly a thousand programs, and an estimated 25,000 athletes.
In two years at Ventura College, who placed 4th at the 2013 edition of the massive CCCAA Championship meet, Chung went a perfect 6-for-6 in Conference Championships. That includes last year, where he won the 200 back in 1:48.58, the 100 back in 49.11 (he’s been 48.53), and the 50 free in 20.46 (he was 19.91 the week before). He’s also been as fast as a 44.4 flat-start in the 100 yard free, and a 43.7 on a relay.
He’s the Hong Kong National Record holder in the 50 back (26.22) and 100 back (57.49) in long course meters. He just missed qualifying for lat year’s Olympic Games.
Additionally, he was Ventura College’s top scholar athlete with a GPA of 3.88, and the Hong Kong native will use his final two years of eligibility to swim for Cal beginning next fall.
The female winner was Grace Graham-Zamudio, a distance runner from Glendale College.
