RIVERSIDE, Calif (UNLVRebels.com) – The UNLV women’s swimming team swept Cal Baptist and UC Santa Barbara while the men’s squad also defeated CBU in their respective double duals over the weekend at the Lancer Aquatics Center.
In the women’s sweep, the Scarlet & Gray defeated the Lancers, 147-50 and UCSB, 104-97. On the men’s side, the Rebels topped CBU, 140-91 but fell to the Gauchos’ men, 134-97.
During the meet, the Rebel women won six individual events and tallied 19 top-3 finishes. On the men’s side, the Scarlet & Gray posted three individual wins and 14 top-3 finishes.
THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:
– In a 1-2-3 sweep of the 700 free, senior Gina Miller placed first (7:09.13), while junior Hannah Jones (7:20.07) and junior Ashley Hughes (7:25.59) placed second and third, respectively.
– Sophomore Victoria Villarreal earned a fourth-place finish in the 75 back (43.20) while freshman Halayna Montrichard followed closely behind in fifth (43.22).
– Senior Heather Gardner posted multiple top-5 finishes, she earned a second-place finish in the 75 breast (47.75) and placed fourth in the 150 breast (1:45.52).
– In the 150 fly, sophomore Ava Olson picked up a second-place finish (1:30.90) and freshman Lauren Palacios finished third (1:31.20).
– Leading the Scarlet & Gray in the 25 free, sophomore Fernanda Mendez Guerra took second (11.19) and senior Bridget Sullivan placed fifth (11.53).
– In another event victory, Mendez Guerra won in the 75 free, posting a time of 37.20 seconds. Junior Erika Carlson added a third-place finish (38.05) in the same event.
– In the 150 back, freshman Grace Wharton (1:33.05) placed second and Villarreal (1:33.24) placed third.
– The 400 free relay ‘A’ squad of junior Averi Webb, Mendez Guerra, Carlson and Olson tag-teamed to a first-place time of 3:02.82. The Scarlet & Gray ‘B’ team of senior Pilar Cohen, Sullivan, junior Marta Klimek and Miller combined for a second-place time of 3:06.95.
– In another Rebel victory, Mendez Guerra won the 75 fly with a time of 40.30. Additionally, Palacios contributed a third-place finish in the event (41.91).
– The women’s 200 IM saw three Scarlet & Gray top-5 finishes, with Carlson taking first (2:04.22) along with Olson in third (2:08.91) and Wharton in fifth (2:10.68).
– After advancing in the 25 free quarterfinal and semifinals, Mendez Guerra won the finals in a time of 10.85.
THE RUNDOWN – MEN:
– Adding a top-3 finish in the 700 free, sophomore Hayden Lambert placed third with a time of 6:36.23.
– The men’s 75 back saw two Rebels with top-5 finishes. Sophomore Wikus Potgieter posted a third-place finish (36.58) and sophomore Tatsuki Inoue came in fourth (36.70).
– Senior Adnan Beji (40.29) provided a first-place finish in the 75 breast to lead a 1-2 Rebel punch. The Scarlet & Gray senior Daniel Nicusan (40.31) earned the second-place spot.
– Junior Ian Belflower tallied multiple top-5 finishes, placing third in the 75 fly (36.42) and fourth in the 150 fly (1:20.96).
– Redshirt freshman Emil Perez also posted multiple top-5 finishes, taking second in the 75 free (33.44), third in the 25 free (9.79) and fifth in the 75 fly (37.05).
– The Scarlet & Gray didn’t hold back in the 150 back, reeling in a 1-2-3 sweep as Inoue (1:18.35) took the event victory. Topping off the sweep, Potgieter (1:20.49) and senior McKay Mickelson (1:20.88) reached the wall in second and third, respectively.
– The duo of Nicusan and Beji added another 1-2 finish in the 150 breast. Nicusan took first (1:27.74) and was followed by Beji in second (1:28.08).
– The men’s 400 free relay ‘C’ team of freshman Gabriel Schreiber, Inoue, Mickelson and senior Andrew Navarro placed second (2:50.13).
– The Rebel men also posted three top-5 finishes in the 200 IM. Nicusan headlined the trio in third (1:52.21), followed by senior Cooper Kiel (1:54.08) and Mickelson (1:56.01) in third and fifth, respectively.
UP NEXT: The Scarlet & Gray women’s group will head up to UNR on Friday, Jan. 17, with events starting at 3 p.m. PT. The men’s and women’s squads will both return home for a two-day dual meet against Wyoming on Friday-Saturday, Jan. 24-25.

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Men’s and Women’s Swim started the new year off strong against Cal Baptist and UNLV. The Gauchos combined to outpace the Lancers 313.50 to 118.50, and the Rebels 231.00 to 201.00.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The start of 2025 saw Santa Barbara successfully compete in new events for the first time this season. The relay team of Austin Sparrow, Matt Driscoll, Samantha Banos, and Miranda Stevenson captured the 400-yard mixed medley relay (3:36.92). Matt Driscoll, Austin Sparrow, Euginie Lanilis, and Miranda Stevenson were another relay team that found glory – they won the 300-yard mixed freestyle relay (2:20.48).
The Gauchos found themselves competing in 25, 75, and 150-yard events for the first time this season too. CoCo Quill won the 75-yard backstroke (41.62) and Ashley Ray took the 75-yard breaststroke (46.80). The women’s team didn’t stop there. Samantha Banos added a victory in the 150-yard butterfly (1:28.87), Hazel Derr won the 150-yard backstroke (1:30.57), and Lucy Huang rounded out the group with gold in the 150-yard breaststroke (1:43.67). Alexi Zuckerman won the 25-yard freestyle (11.18) earlier in the day, and finished second in the 25-yard freestyle bracket later in the day (11.04). Austin Sparrow also made it to the 25-yard freestyle finals coming up 0.06 seconds from first (9.50).
Bryden Thielenhaus had himself a day. The sophomore won the 150-yard butterfly (1:19.31) and 75-yard butterfly (35.74) then teamed up in the first position to win the 400-yard freestyle relay (alongside Kyle Brill, Elek Zettle, and Jack Hendrick – 2:46.99). Although 2024 is over, Kyle Brill’s excellence in IM events isn’t. He won the 200-yarder at 1:51.10.
UP NEXT
The Gauchos return to the Beehive state to take on the BYU Cougars on Friday, Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. They then travel to the University of Utah to square off against the Utes and UCLA Bruins in a dual meet Saturday, Jan. 11 at 10 a.m.
