Unable to Get Canadian Visa, Dylan Bosch Swims 100/200 Fly Time Trials (RACE VIDEO)

Unable to get a visa to travel to Canada for the Canadian World Championship Trials (which allow international participants), Dylan Bosch swam a 1:57.59 at Michigan’s Canham Natatorium on Wednesday in a time trial race.

While the time is unofficial and won’t go into the official history logs, it would rank him 9th in the world in 2015.

Bosch is a South African native, but won’t be swimming at the South African World Championship Trials later this month. His best event, the 200 fly, is the best event that South Africa has as a whole, led by the defending World and Olympic Champion Chad le Clos, with Sebastien Rousseau and Michael Meyer both scheduled to swim at the Trials meet as well.

Below is a 53.23 in the 100 fly also done by Bosch in an unofficial time trial.

Given the large volume of casual border crossings between residents of eastern Michigan and southern Ontario, it seems like even something like ‘because I want to go watch the Windsor Ballet a few times a month’ would be a perfectly valid, if tacky, justification to get a long term multi-entry visa for Canada.

I wonder if it’s a case where he didn’t realize he needed a visa until the last minute and by then, it was too late to get the paperwork turned around in time.

Amazing that anyone can swim a 200 fly at all, much less that fast.

It sounds like Bosch made the decision (perhaps for financial reasons) not to travel all the way to S. Africa for Trials because he doesn’t have a very good chance to make the team. It stinks that Bosch is world-class in pretty much the only event S. Africa doesn’t need him (200 fly); I was just looking at the psych sheets for their Trials, and Michael Andrew, albeit a VERY talented young man, is ranked top 3 in at least 5 events! It would seem Bosch would make the 4×200 free relay, but perhaps that is not enough incentive to make such a long, expensive trip.

So, has Andrew officially announced that he is trying to make the SA Olympic team? Or do they allow foreigners at their trials as well?

I thought he said that he was competing internationally for the U.S.

Ferb and CT Swim Fan: I didn’t mean to confuse anybody. Michael A is in SA visiting family, and I guess they allow foreigners at their Trials.

My understanding is he isn’t a foreigner because of his dual-citizenship.

Well, true, but if the trials are for domestic athletes only, one would think he’d have to declare his intention to represent South Africa before they’d let him compete.
