Men
Lexington, Va. – In its first scored meet of the 2020-21 season, the UMBC men’s swimming and diving team won 15 of 16 events and defeated America East foe VMI, 216-75, at Clark King Pool.
Sophomore Niklas Weigelt (Clayton, Calif.) captured all three sprint freestyle events. The 2019-20 America East Most Outstanding Rookie touched first in the 50 (21.73), 100 (47.40) and 200 (1:43.38) races.
Junior Sam Jyawook (Franklin, Tenn.) won both distance events, taking gold in the 1000 (9:34.29) and 500 (4:41.77) freestyles. Sophomore diver Will Henrickson (Ellicott City, Md./River Hill) earned the top spot on both boards, amassing 223.10 points on the 1-meter board and 219.80 on the 3-meter board.
UMBC also opened and closed the meet with relay wins in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle events.
Other Retriever winners were Luka Zuric (100 backstroke), Dani Nicusen (100 breaststroke), Charles Bennici (200 butterfly), Max Casey (200 back), Maxwell Trias (200 breast) and Gabe Laracuente (100 fly).
The diving portion of the America East Championships will be held April 17-18 at Binghamton University (N.Y.) while the swimming section is scheduled for April 23-25 at NJIT.
Women

Juniors Caroline Sargent (Trumbull, Conn.) and Lily McCoy (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) paced the Retrievers with two victories apiece. Sargent triumphed in the 100 backstroke (59.10) and 200 IM (2:13.44), while McCoy took both breaststroke events (100- 1:07.53, 200-2:27.45).
UMBC also opened and closed the meet with relay wins in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle events.
Other Retriever winners were Mya Loniewski (1000 freestyle), Rosa Farag (200 freestyle), Kyle Kelly (200 butterfly), Makaela Hill (50 free), Alexis Bruington (1 meter diving), Nyah Stahl (200 backstroke), Susie Cadigan (500 free) and Natalija Marin (100 fly).

LEXINGTON, Va. – The VMI men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams finished the 2020-21 home season Friday against the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in Clark-King Pool. The Keydets had several nice performances and lone senior Thomas Muldowney was honored in a pre-meet ceremony. UMBC won the men’s meet 216-75 and the women’s 218-67.
Junior Sophie Svoboda won the women’s 100 freestyle in 55.96 and was second in both the 50 free in 2.59 and 200 free in 2:00.95. Sophomore London Yerasimides won the 3 meter diving competition with a score of 191.75, while Sarah Liebenow was second in the 1000 yard freestyle (12:13.17) and fourth in the 200 back (2:28.00). Anne Bowles took third place in both the 100 breast in 1:09.63 and the 200 breast in 2:39.05 and was fourth in the 200 IM in 2:26.27. Ruki Sarkari was fourth in the 100 fly (1:09.46) and fourth in the 100 back (1:06.15) and Jillian Maher came in third in the 500 free in 5:57.44. Maher, Bowles, Sarkari and Jessica Cox finished the 200 medley relay in 2:02.44 and Isabella DeCosta, Svoboda, Liebenow and Kate Taylor swam the 400 free relay in 3:54.88.
Sophomore Jack Sheehan won the men’s 200 IM in 1:57.46 and finished sixth in the 200 free in 1:48.32, while freshman Chino Vera took second in the 50 free in 21.89 and the 100 free (48.36). Zach Emerson was fourth in both the 100 back (54.52) and the 200 back (2:07.58) and Dalton Cosner placed fourth in the 100 fly (54.62) and 200 fly (2:04.88). Ryan Cooper took third in the 200 breast in 2:15.08 and Andrew Mills was fourth in the 500 free in 5:14.27. Conner Jorgensen was third in the 1000 free in 10:30.66, Chase Lane took third in the 100 breast in 1:00.45 and Bridger Thurston was second in the 1 meter diving competition (218.95) and the 3 meter (212.00).
The 200 medley relay team of Emerson, Sheehan, Muldowney and Vera was third in 1:37.26 and the 400 free relay team of Cosner, Vera, Connor Doyle and Emerson was second in 3:14.69.
The Keydets will close the season at the America East Championships, which this year is divided between separate diving and swimming competitions. The diving portion of the championships will be held April 17-18 at Binghamton University (N.Y.) while the swimming section is scheduled for April 23-25 at NJIT.
