Fairfax, Va. – The UMBC swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet at George Mason’s Jim McKay Natatorium on Saturday. The women won eight events en route to a 166-127 victory, while the men captured ten as they triumphed, 165-133.

Both squads have posted three consecutive dual meet victories heading into the regular season finale and Senior Day/Alumni Day versus East Carolina next Saturday, Jan. 25.

“I am so proud of our program today,” said head coach Chad Cradock. “Our men and women are competing at their best as we head into the championship season and that is exactly where we want to be. We met an extremely strong George Mason team and they helped us be the best we could be.”

Junior Natalija Marin (Belgrade, Serbia) paced the women, besting the field in the 200 freestyle and 200 butterfly and placing second in the 100 yard butterfly.

On the men’s side, senior Ilia Rattsev (Moscow, Russia) continued his brilliant final campaign, capturing three freestyle (50, 100, 200) events. Junior Kai Wisner (Syracuse, N.Y.) excelled in the distance events, winning the 500 and 1000 freestyles and placing second in the 200 individual medley.

The women’s first event of the day was pivotal, as the 200 medley relay team of senior Emily Vance (Finksburg, Md./Westminster), freshman Jenna Gwinn (Baltimore, Md./Mount de Sales), senior Sotiria Neofytou (Limassol, Cyprus) and sophomore Tonia Papapertrou (Nicosia, Cyprus) reached the wall just .12 seconds ahead of the Patriots’ top foursome in a time of 1:46.61.

In the latter part of the meet, UMBC put things away as the Retrievers captured gold, silver and bronze in the 200 yard breaststroke and the 100 yard butterfly. Sophomore Emma Bridges (Foxboro, Mass.) captured the former event in 2:25.27, while Neofytou led the UMBC trio in the fly at 56.71.

The men captured gold and silver in four events. Wisner (9:25.77) edged teammate sophomore Sam Jyawook (Franklin, Tenn.) in the 1000, while Rattsev (45.89) just out-touched sophomore Tiago Asakawa (Sumaré, Brazil) (45.96) in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Luka Zuric (Setauket, N.Y.) nipped senior Garrett Wlochowski (Manchester, Conn.) in the 200-yard backstroke and sophomore Jimmy Dwyer (New City, N.Y.) told gold over Wisner in the 200 IM with a mark of 1:54.40.

The meet versus the Pirates gets underway at 1:00 p.m. at the UMBC Aquatic Complex. Senior Day ceremonies will precede the competition.

FAIRFAX, Va. – The George Mason women’s swimming and diving team fell to UMBC, 166-127, while the men’s team dropped a 165-133 decision to the Retrievers on Saturday at the Jim McKay Natatorium.

On the women’s side, sophomore Jacquee Clabeaux won both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.18) and 100-yard freestyle (52.24).

Mason swept the podium in the 200-yard IM.  Freshman Leah Riley won the event (2:11.07), sophomore Sophie McKinley was second (2:14.03) and freshman Ashton Gasper finished third (2:15.46).

The Patriots went one-three in the 100-yard backstroke, with sophomore Hannah Milikich taking the top spot on the podium (58.62) and freshman Lauren Ashton third (59.78).  Milikich also notched a second-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.76).

The combination of junior Shannon Glesing, sophomore Chloe Fite, Clabeaux and Riley took second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:46.93).  Senior Rachel Chalsma, sophomore Ariana Lewis, freshman Grace Newton and Milikich placed third (1:48.71).

Riley also made the podium with a third-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly (2:10.05).

In the 50-yard freestyle, Glesing placed second (24.47).  Fite swam to a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle (24.76) and a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle (54.55).

Sophomore Megan Cummins placed second in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:43.27) and McKinley finished fifth in the event (11:05.77).

In the 200-yard freestyle, sophomore Laura Hodge took second (1:56.36), Gasper was sixth (2:01.93) and senior Hannah Ikenberry seventh (2:03.16).  Ikenberry made the podium with a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (5:20.32).

McKinley placed fourth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:30.95), with classmate Ana Kuzemka sixth (2:38.62) and freshman Grace Newton seventh (2:44.72).

Clabeaux, Fite, Hodge and Lewis took the top spot in the 400-freestyle relay (3:33.58).

In the deep end of the pool, junior Marina Toone had a spectacular day, winning the one-meter dive with a score of 270.90 and the three-meter event with a score of 290.78.

On the men’s side, the Patriots took all three spots in the podium in the 100-yard breaststroke.  Senior Christopher Stankiewicz won the event (57.26), with junior Dylan Peck second (58.72) and graduate student Jake Ball third (58.99).

The group of seniors Logan Eubanks and Stankiewicz, along with juniors Devin Truong and Will Rastatter won the 200-yard medley relay (1:31.75).  Senior Ryan Donnelly, sophomore Nick Ashton, freshman Luke DeVore and Ball placed third (1:32.95).

Ball claimed the top spot in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:08.51), with freshman Thomas Chapman finishing third to make the podium (2:08.99).

Donnelly placed second in the 100-yard backstroke (50.10) and third in the 200-yard backstroke (1:51.75).  DeVore was third in the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.98) and Rastatter was third in the 50-yard freestyle (21.12).

Senior Attila Kiss placed third in the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:41.37), with freshman Jackson Knouse sixth in the event (9:54.23).  Kiss notched a second-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle (4:37.78).

In the 200-yard freestyle, junior Drake Moretz took second (1:41.04), while Ashton was sixth (1:45.32) and freshman Sammy Lucht seventh (1:46.57).

Senior Gerald Hodges, Jr. swept the men’s diving events, winning the one-meter with a score of 300.23 and the three-meter with a score of 296.55.

In the final event of the day, the team of Ashton, Moretz, Donnelly and Rastatter won the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:05.54).

The Patriots are back in action when they take on Army, American and Old Dominion on Saturday, Jan. 25 in West Point, N.Y.
