UIC turned in determined performances throughout the meet and earned wins over Green Bay by the men’s and women’s teams Saturday afternoon. Trailing by 15 points halfway through the meet, the women came back strong in the second half and won the last four events to earn a 157-141 win. The men had a more comfortable 30-point margin of victory. Josh Dellorto, Bryce Wyma, and Gabriele Sasia all won individual events for the first time this year.
The men closed the meet in style. The 200 free relay team broke the pool record with a time of 1:23.47.
“This was our third tough meet in just a week’s time, and we knew Green Bay was going to throw everything they had at us,” Tim Loeffler said. “We had our stumbles and struggles throughout, but this team refused to give up. Because of the pride and dedication to each other, they proved that they could overcome anything today and win. We are one proud coaching staff.”
One more non-conference meet remains for the swim team before the Horizon League Championships. The diving squads will also host the UIC Diving Invitational next month. UIC’s women closed conference competition with a 6-1 record – their best ever.
Counting the wins over IUPUI and Green Bay at the IUPUI House of Champions, the Flames men finished the season with a 5-2 conference record. That is one of their best records in recent history.
Event Winners – Men
- Andrew Lewarchick took first in 1-meter diving, scoring 311.77 and edging out Felix LaFortune by three points. Lewarchick’s score qualified him for the NCAA Zone competition.
- LaFortune won the 3-meter diving event. He set a season high of 358.27.
- Josh Dellorto got his first win of the season in the 200 free.
- Bryce Wyma was also a first-time winner in the 100 back.
- Luke Hutchinson took the 200 fly for the fourth time.
- Danny Sivak won the 200 back in a Flames sweep.
- Gabriele Sasia was the 100 fly winner.
Event Winners – Women
- Cydney Liebenberg remained undefeated in 3-meter diving with a winning score of 306.30. She also won the 1-meter event for her fifth consecutive sweep.
- Christina Neri won the 1000 free in 10:27.53. It was the first time she swam the event since November.
- Anna Scovill overcame a slow first lap to win the 100 back.
- Maddie Hawker out-touched Victoria Thor in the 500 free.
- Emily Sullivan won the 100 fly to begin the Flames’ late-meet comeback.
- Lilly Culp got a big win in the 200 IM.
Top Performances – Men
- LaFortune was second on the 1-meter board with his third straight Zone-qualifying score. Lewarchick was second in 3-meter diving.
- Hunter Crook and Luke Hutchinson went 2-3 in the 1000. They were 3-4 in the 500.
- Michael Tegeler was second in the 200 free. He was also second in the 200 back and the 200 IM.
- Owen Zant scored points with third place finishes in the 100 and 200 back.
- Danny Sivak came in second in the 100 breast, swimming it for the first time this season.
- Kyle Lewarchick was third in the 200 fly and second in the 500 free and the 200 IM.
- Jeff Wiedoff and Eric Weng came in second and third, respectively in the 50 free.
- Josh Dellorto was second in the 100 free.
Top Performances – Women
- Abby Hellinga had a season best score in 3-meter diving and grabbed her first second-place finish. Her season-best on the 1-meter board was good for third, behind Maya Molldrem.
- Ashton Amerman was fourth in the 1000. She was third in the 200 IM.
- Maddie Hawker led a trio of Flames in the 200 free. She was second, followed immediately by Victoria Thor and Misha Neal. Thor later came in second in the 500 by 0.04 seconds.
- Poleena Kovalaske came in second in the 100 breast and the 100 free.
- Lilly Culp was second in the 200 fly.
- Lauren Johnson was second in the 50 free and third in the 100.
- Anna Scovill was the second place swimmer in the 200 back.
- Jessica Amyette gave UIC yet another second place finish, in the 200 breast.
Relays – Men
- Danny Sivak, Ben Gabbey, Gabriele Sasia, and Jeff Wiedoff were second in the 200 medley.
- Sivak, Eric Weng, Bryce Wyma, and Wiedoff were the record-setting 200 free team.
Relays – Women
- Anna Scovill, Poleena Kovalaske, Emily Sullivan, and Lauren Johnson took second place in the 200 medley relay.
- Johnson, Kovalaske, Gabbie Werner, and Beth Kelzer were the reshuffled 200 free team that won the race to clinch the meet.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) —The Green Bay swimming and diving team celebrated Senior Day this afternoon against UIC. Unfortunately, the Phoenix fell by a combined score of 276-322.
Despite the lost to the Flames, Both the men and women opened up with victories in the 200 medley relay. Additionally, Green Bay swept the 100 breast on both sides with freshman Emilie Boll winning with the time of 1:02.86 and junior Max Boehnlein touching first with the time of 55.91.
Both junior Anna Liu and junior Ben Redman won the 50 freestyle for the Phoenix as well during the meet. Liu took home first place with a time of 23.80 and Redman won with the time of 20.64.
During the 200 breast, both Emilie Boll and Max Boehnlein claimed the top spot for the Phoenix again. Boehnlein capped off his perfect four wins out of four races in the 200 IM with a time of 1:53.47.
“Both teams had strong showings for our seniors today,” stated interim head coach Eddie Gillie. “I’m proud of how we competed during the meet and see this team getting stronger and stronger week-to-week.”
