Ultra Swimmer of the Month: Jassen Yep

Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

Jassen Yep woke up on March 1, 2025, owning a personal best time of 1:50.40 in the 200 breaststroke.

One month later, he has three sub-1:50 swims, becoming the third-fastest performer in history and the most unlikely champion of the 2025 Men’s NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

It started on the final day of the Men’s Big Ten Championships in Minneapolis, where Yep advanced 1st out of the 200 breast prelims (1:51.20) before battling head-to-head with Indiana teammate Josh Matheny in the final, finishing a close runner-up in a new personal best of 1:49.93.

Yep, a fifth-year senior with the Hoosiers, then delivered the swim of his life at the NCAA Championships four weeks later.

After setting a personal best of 1:49.39 in the 200 breast prelims, which broke Matheny’s newly-minted Indiana record of 1:49.83, the 22-year-old Yep took down a loaded field to win the NCAA final in a time of 1:48.30, dropping over a second from his morning PB.
