Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month: Marwan el-Kamash

Ultra Swim Swimmer of the Month is a recurring SwimSwam feature shedding light on a U.S.-based swimmer who has proven themselves over the past month. As with any item of recognition, Swimmer of the Month is a subjective exercise meant to highlight one athlete whose work holds noteworthy context – perhaps a swimmer who was visibly outperforming other swimmers over the month, or one whose accomplishments slipped through the cracks among other high-profile swims. If your favorite athlete wasn’t selected, feel free to respectfully recognize them in our comment section.

The mid-distance freestyle events on this year’s Pro Swim Series have been owned by Zane Grothe. But in Mesa this month, Marwan el-Kamash changed that.

In two prior Pro Swim Series stops, Grothe had five wins in 8 events, including an undefeated track record in the 400 and 800 frees. But in Mesa, el-Kamash ended Grothe’s 400 free run and also beat Grothe head to head in the 200 free.

El-Kamash was 1:49.05 to touch out Grothe by .02 in the 200, and he dominated the 400, going 3:49.52 to win by a whopping three seconds over Grothe, who hadn’t been beaten yet on this year’s series. El-Kamash also went right down to the wire with Grothe in the 800, finishing second by just .2 seconds.
