LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s and women’s swim teams came out on top at the dual meet versus Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday. It was the first time both Triton squads were home since November. The men won with a score of 174.5-119.5 while the Triton women won with a score of 166.5-133.5.
The Tritons women’s team is now 4-2 in dual meets and the men are 3-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Triton men stormed the pool by taking first in 10 events; two relays and eight individual events. Nathan Lee, Aidan Simpson, Devin Esser, and Will Blake took first in the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 3:23.74. Spencer Daily, Nate Cunnan, Andrija Petkovic, and Tyler James added 11 points by taking first in the 200 yard freestyle relay, posting a time of 1:22.59.
In addition, Spencer Daily took first in both the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 50.11 and 45.42 in the 100 yard freestyle. Ivan Kurakin won the 200 yard freestyle, finishing in 1:38.36; he then won the 500 freestyle, finishing in 4:30.46. Aidan Simpson won 9 points for the Tritons by taking first in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:02.73. Nate Cunnan placed first in the 50 yard freestyle, swimming 20.78. Adding to the Tritons score, Tyler James swam a 50.18 to take first in the 100 yard backstroke. Taking the 100 yard breaststroke, Luke Pusateri swam a 57.12.
The Triton women took eight first place finishes; one relay and seven individual events. Brittney Miles, Tina Reuter, Jordan Phillips, and Miranda Renner placed first in the 200 yard freestyle relay swimming a 1:33.94.
In the individual events, Juli Arzave took first in the 1000 yard freestyle with a time of 10:22.02. Sophie Francis posted a 1:52.85 in the 200 yard freestyle to take first. Teagan Monroe took the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 57.20. Katie Cho swam a 2:05.26 in the 200 yard butterfly for first place. The 100 yard freestyle was won by Tina Reuter with a time of 52.18. Katja Pavicevic placed first with a time of 2:16.20 in the 200 yard breaststroke.Jordan Phillips took first in the 100 yard butterfly posting a 55.44.
Diver Lydia Pannell took first in the women’s three-meter diving with Jasmyn Cheng, Isabella Perez, and Sarah Umeda taking second, third, and sixth. Diver Kyland Parenti placed second in the men’s one-meter and three-meter diving.

The Tritons will be back home next weekend at Canyonview Aquatic Center to host California Baptist in a dual meet beginning at noon. Spectators will not be permitted, but there will be a live video feed on UCSDTritons.com.

Men’s Swimming
LA JOLLA, Ca. – The Pomona-Pitzer men’s swimming and diving team fell to Division I UC San Diego 174.5 to 119.5. Ben Willet highlighted the Sagehens efforts with a NCAA cut score in the 3m dive. The Sagehens will close out the month of January with a dual meet at Caltech on the Jan. 29 at 10:30 a.m.
How It Happened
The Sagehens 400 yard medley relay team of Jason Lu, Dylan Hou, Gordon Kenny, and Tag Curwen combined for a time of 3:25.84 to take second in the event. Larry Yu won the 1,000 yard freestyle with a time of 9:25.93, just three seconds away from the program record. Yu took second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 46.09 seconds. Jason Lu took second in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 52.01 seconds. Yu won the 200 yard backstroke with a time of 1:51.43. Dylan Hou swam to a second place finish in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 57.21 seconds, just .09 seconds behind first place.
Daniel Gao took first place in the 200 yard butterfly after touching the wall in 1:53.42 and took second in the 200 yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.80. In the 50 yard freestyle, Lucas Ming Menkhoff tied for third with a time of 21.40 seconds. Zion Fruge led the way for Pomona-Pitzer in the 100 yard butterfly, taking second with a time of 52.00 seconds. In the 400 yard IM, Larry Yu took first in 4:00.34 with Jason Lu coming in second with a time of 4:04.55. The Sagehens 200 yard freestyle relay team of Eric Liu, Ted Hwang, Tag Curwen, and Archie Spindler took third after combining for a time of 1:24.86.
Ben Willett won the 3m dive with an NCAA cut score of 284.85 points and won the 1m dive with a score of 244.70 points.

Women’s Swimming

The Sagehens will close out the month of January with a dual meet at Caltech on the Jan. 29 at 10:30 a.m.
How It Happened
The 400 yard medley team of Abbey Liao, Alex Gill, Alexandra Turvey, and Avery Turney took first with an NCAA cut time of 3:48.98. In the 1000 yard freestyle, Elise Jones led the way for the Sagehens after touching the wall in 10:34.67 to take second place. The 200 yard freestyle featured two Sagehens in the top-three with Karolina Dzieciol (1:53.38) and Haley Kirtland (1:53.87) taking second and third in the event. Kirtland also took second in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 52.53 seconds. Abbey Liao swam to a second place finish in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58.53 seconds while Emily Brooks touched in 59.15 seconds to take third.
Alex Gill won the 100 yard breaststroke after finishing the race in 1:03.29. Abby Smith took second in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.14. Alexandra Turvey took first in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.60 seconds with teammate Gabby Calvi taking third in 24.25 seconds. Valerie Mello was the top finisher for Pomona-Pitzer in the 200 yard backstroke, tying for third place with a time of 2:08.45.
Emmie Appl set her first program record of the day in the 200 yard breaststroke after touching the wall in an NCAA cut time of 2:17.53, good for second place. Alexandra Werner took third in the event with an NCAA cut time of 2:18.57. Appl set her second program record in the 400 yard IM, taking first place with an NCAA time of 4:27.50. Elise Jones took third in the event, touching in an NCAA cut time of 4:28.66. Karolina Dzieciol took first in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:04.02. Alexandra Turvey swam to a second place finish in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 55.55 seconds.
The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Avery Turney, Alex Gill, Katie Gould, and Alexandra Turvey hit an NCAA cut time of 1:35.42 and finished second in the event.
Ruby Epstein won the 1m dive with a score of 249.55. Eleanor Mackey led the way for the Sagehens in the 3m dive with a score of 202.95 points.
