STORRS, Conn. – The UConn swimming and diving team won the Husky Invite on Saturday morning. The two-day event scores saw the Huskies take down Northeastern 156-122 and CCSU 217-124. Northeastern also defeated CCSU by a score of 206-135.
“It’s been great, the environment is amazing. We really missed having fans here and this weekend was really exciting,” said head coach Chris Maiello.
“I thought the team did really well, they were tough. We talked about how tough these two-day events can be and they did a great job. We had solid swims from everyone. It was a great start to the season and hopefully we can use this momentum going forward.”
The 200-yard medley relay team of sophomore Kayla Mendonca, senior Katelyn Walsh, senior Linnea Anderson, and sophomore Melissa Lowry placed first in the event, coming in at 1:46.39. Freshman Paige Sugra, sophomore Angela Gambardella, senior Ali Grace, and freshman Maggie Donlevy finished third in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:47.84.
“It was exciting to have our friends and family back here today to watch us compete in person,” said Kayla Mendonca. “It’s a lot of fun to have that energy back and the support from everyone. We’ve been working very hard to get back here and it’s nice to see it paying off.”
Senior Katie Lightle was the top finisher for the Huskies in the 1650 freestyle race, finishing third with a time of 18:32.90. Fellow senior Lena Redisch placed fifth in the event, coming in at 18:48.83. UConn took first and second place in the 200-freestyle, with Melissa Lowry placing first with a time of 1:55.35 and junior Mia Galat taking second with a time of 1:56.90. Kayla Mendonca finished fourth in the event, finishing at 1:57.61.
In the 200 IM, Angela Gambardella was the top finisher for UConn with a time of 2:12.96. Junior Anna Wenman placed fifth in the event, finishing at 2:13.63. The Huskies also grabbed first and second place finishes in the 200-butterfly, with Mia Galat and Linnea Anderson taking the top spots at 2:08.23 and 2:08.35, respectively.
“I think the meet went really well, the team had a lot of energy, especially coming back from last year,” said Angela Gambardella. “This was good for us to be back in the pool and back to our schedule. We are really excited for this season.”
Maggie Donlevy finished third in the 100-freestyle with a time of 53.80. Junior Charlotte Proceller placed fifth, coming in at 54.05.

The Huskies return to the pool to host Villanova on Saturday, October 16th at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 12:00pm in Storrs.

STORRS, Conn. – Sophomore Jamie Koo won two events, including setting a new personal best in the 100 freestyle, while several freshmen had strong collegiate debuts as the Northeastern Swimming & Diving team completed its tri-meet at UConn on Saturday.
The Huskies defeated Central Connecticut State, 206-135, but fell to host UConn, 156-122.
- The meet was the first collegiate meet for 22 of 30 on the NU roster.
- Koo won the 100 Free in a personal best time of 52.56, beating her previous best time of 54.23. She also won the 50 Free in a time of 23.60, and took second in the 100 Fly and the 400 Free Relay.
- Freshman Devon Muldoon won the 400 IM in 4:35.17, over two-and-a-half seconds better than the second place finisher (4:37.45). She also coasted to a win in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.97, nearly two seconds ahead of second place (2:11.39).
- Freshman Hannah Seward won the 100 Fly in a time of 56.08, with Koo finishing in second right behind her at 56.14. She was also on the relay teams that finished second in the 400 Free Relay and the 200 Medley Relay.
- Sophomore Grace Miller won the 500 Free in a time of 5:08.85.
- The Huskies took the top two spots in the 1650 Free, as senior Mary Banick easily took first in 18:06.71, while freshman Daphne Peterson took second with a time of 18:23.71
- Northeastern had a trio of freshmen take the top three spots in the 200 IM. Muldoon (2:09.97) and Seward (2:11.84) took first and third, while classmate Francesca Arciniegas took second in a time of 2:11.39.
- Freshman Erin Murphy was the highest scoring NU diver when she took fifth in the 3-Meter Dive with a score of 224.20.
Northeastern returns to the pool on October 23 with a tri-meet at Boston U. against BU and Bryant. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m.

The Central Connecticut women’s swimming and diving team opened the 2021-22 season at the Husky Invite at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs, CT. The three-team, two-day event included the host UConn Huskies and Northeastern, as well as the Blue Devils.
CCSU fell to UConn 217-124, while Northeastern edged the Blue Devils 106-135.

TOP PERFORMANCES
- 400 Yard Medley Relay – The team of senior Alex Lindgren and sophomores Nathalie Pena, Cassidy Stotler and Kelly Stotler clocked a time of 4:03.27 to place fourth, just ahead of seniors Jeannette King, Mariana Espino and Simona Visinski and sophomore Ashley Calderon, who clocked in at 4:03.31.
- 400 Yard IM – Sophomore Morgan O’Hara placed fourth, clocking a time of 4:42.05.
- 500 Yard Free – Central had three swimmers finish in the top six. Senior Katie Czulewicz (5:15.90) placed third, followed by junior Shannon Welcome (5:18.95) and sophomore Abbey Keane (5:20.90) who placed sixth.
- 100 Yard Back – Senior Alex Lindgren turned in a time of 1:07.80 to place fourth.
- 400 Free Relay – The team of seniors Czulewicz, King, Visinski and Welcome clocked a time of 3:36.85, placing fourth. The relay of Calderon, O’Hara, and seniors Hallie Perrin and Destiny Johnson clocked a time of 3:46.49.
- 1650 Yard Free – Keane had the fourth fastest time with a mark of 18:34.16, while freshman Taylor Demarest had a time of 19:10.56.
- 200 Yard Free – Welcome (1:57.96), Czulewicz (1:58.55), Perrin (2:02.46) and sophomore Kelly Stotler (2:02.70) all finished within five seconds of each other to place 5th through 8th.
- 1-meter Diving – Freshman Zoe Baker led the CCSU trio of divers with a score of 190.15. Freshman Elyse Boothroyd (170.05) and senior Rachel Pinsky (132.35) also scored for Central.
- 100 Yard Free – King turned in the second-fastest time in the event with a time of 53.70.
- 200 Yard Breaststroke – Lindgren had a time of 2:26.13, to place third.
- 200 Yard Free Relay – The relay of King, Perrin, Czulewicz and Visinksi had the fourth-fastest time of 1:41.05. The relay of Calderon, Welcome, Johnson and Cassidy Stotler was just behind in 1:41.97.
