MALIBU, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara Men’s and Women’s Swim picked up their season on Pepperdine’s campus this Saturday after nearly a month-long hiatus. Both teams earned more points than their competitors, the UC San Diego Tritons and Pepperdine Waves (women). The Gauchos’ seventeen victories on the day resulted in a combined 299 points. The Gauchos broke numerous records in Malibu to add to the sweetness of their victory.

FROM HEAD COACH JACLYN ROSEN
“I am super proud of how everyone swam today,” said Rosen. We fought for the win on the women’s side, and everyone stepped up to get the job done. On the men’s side, we’re learning new things from our freshmen, which is incredibly valuable for the future. I especially want to shout out all our seniors. We are prepared and looking forward to next week at Utah Tech.”

HOW IT HAPPENED
Two seniors – Justin Wong and Austin Sparrow showed out for the men’s team. Sparrow took the 50 freestyle (19.99), 100 freestyle (43.26 – which is fourth all-time), 200 freestyle (1:35.04), and 200 freestyle relay at a time of 1:19.85 (alongside Justin WongRob Carpenter, and Matt Driscoll). Austin’s time in the 200 freestyle is the second-fastest ever recorded by a Gaucho swimmer. Justin Wong individually captured the 100 and 200 butterfly (47.79; 1:48.62). His time in the 100 butterfly enters the record books in tenth place. Impressively, the top three of the 100 butterfly featured all Blue and Gold (Bryden Thielenhaus and Zachary Tamusaitis). Wong also featured on the winning 200 medley relay team (with Matt Driscoll, Jonah Lee, and Zachary Tamusaitis) who clocked in at 1:27.20.

Samantha Banos picked up right where she left off. Of the five events Santa Barbara’s women took, the junior notched three – all of which broke Gaucho all-time records. She scored the 200 freestyle at 1:48.04 and continued her freestyle excellence in the 500-yarder (4:50.21). Both of these freestyle event times place her fifth all-time respectively. She also won the 200 butterfly with a speed of 1:57.22 (faster than second place by over five seconds, and second best by any UC Santa Barbara swimmer ever).

Numerous other Gauchos helped contribute to the victory. Hazel Derr’s time in the 200 backstroke (2:00.05) was true. Tyryn Empremsilapa nabbed a first-place finish in the 100 freestyle (50.77). Kyle Brill built upon his dominance in the IM, adding yet another victory to his career – this time in the 200-yarder (1:45.82). This speed is good for fourth all-time in the UC Santa Barbara Swim record book. The Santa Clarita native also won the 100 breaststroke (53.27), breaking a record to enter the annals in third. In addition to his contributions to two winning relay teams, Matt Driscoll also captured the 100 backstroke at a time of 47.09 (third all-time in Blue and Gold history). Every freestyle men’s event was won by a Gaucho. Jack Hendrick in the 500 (4:32.18) and Taber daCosta in the 1650 (15:23.28) rounded out the sweep. daCosta’s time is the ninth-ever best time by a Gaucho.

QUOTABLES

“All in all incredibly proud of our Wave women and their performance today,” head coach Ellie Monobe said. “We are proud that we are executing the way we are, and we saw that today with our attention to detail. We had huge wins with Alexandra Browne getting first in the fifty, and beating UC San Diego in not only the 50 free, but also the 100 free. We had many best times today, which is a great sign at this point in the season. This is a team that is ready to compete at a high level, and against some strong competition. We’re very excited with where this team is at and we’re looking forward to the mid-season championship next week. This is a special team to coach, and I couldn’t be prouder of our women.”
