Caribbean Waterpolo powerhouse Trinidad and Tobago are now Bahamas bound to the CARIFTA Waterpolo Championships as our as our under 16 male and under 19 female teams make their bid to successfully defend our CARIFTA Water Polo title from April 7th – 9th 2017.
T & T’s Head delegate Jerry Chin Lee was pleased with the team selection and training regimen, and believe the athletes will give a good account of themselves.
“As part of our preparations for CCCAN our 15UM team will be competing in the 16UM category at the Carifta Championships. Our 18UF team will be competing in the 19UF category at this year’s Carifta in their preparation for CCCAN here at home. A team selection was made by the coaches from a pool of athletes who successfully completed the fitness test on March 4th.”
He also praised the young athletes for their commitment to the National team.
“Overall the work ethic of the young athletes, discipline and attendance has been very good. Their training generally consists of conditioning at the 3 early morning sessions while the 4 other sessions are normally reserved for strength, technique, and tactical work through half court work and full game scrimmages.”
Team Coach Kester Scanterbury also expressed confidence at the team’s ability to again win the titles, and is looking forward to a successful tour of duty. Scanterbury commended Chin Lee for his astute management of the team to date especially as it relates to the organisation of team training sessions. He sees CARIFTA as a stepping stone for the CCCAN Championships which are to be hosted in Trinidad and Tobago in June.
“I am very excited for CCCAN and while we have young teams, they are very smart, creative and competitive. I believe our chances are very good in coming on top”.
The U19 females will feature in the tournament’s opening match versus Barbados at 8:30am tomorrow, while the U16 males battle Barbados at 9:20am. At 2:20pm the girls will play again this time versus Jamaica, while the boys face hosts Bahamas at 4:20pm
