In his 8 seasons as head coach at UVA, Todd DeSorbo has now won 5 NCAA women’s swimming and diving titles (in a row). Looking to next year’s team, DeSorbo has reckoned with the fact that they will be without a “Walsh” or “Douglass”, and he’s looking forward to the challenge of battling what other teams may bring to the table.
Time for Todd DeSorbo to snatch high value assets from the transfer portal (50/100 FR, 50/100 BR).
Curious on the thoughts on the performance of Grimes and Hayes? Both seemed off, and Grimes a long ways frm best times.
Hayes went a 2 second PB in the 200 breast and a 2 second PB in the 400 IM this season. She was also .2 off of her best 200IM time from 2023. She went that 200 IM time at NCAAs and was .4 off of her season best in the 400IM at NCAAs. I consider that a pretty successful freshman campaign.
Sprint Revolution! Unfortunately a consequence of the aerobic graveyard back in Charlottesville. I mourn the many tragic final closing meters that dashed a number of Cavalier Olympic hopes last summer. 😔
I’m a fan of UVA /DeSorbo, but this wasn’t their best year. More girls stalled / regressed than broke new ground.
Is back to the drawing board next year
For next year, Virginia has the advantage but will need to swim reasonably well on the women’s side. They have an edge in returning points, but it’s not huge; they have at least one recruit who can score without needing to improve much; they have returning scorers who have proven ability to score more than they did this year. However, they will need to fill a ton of holes on the relays and their sprinting group just got a lot weaker.
For the men, improving to something like top 8 would be a big step forward. Getting past Cal, Texas, and Florida looks pretty unlikely, but if they could overtake any of the other elite teams and get into maybe… Read more »
I think they may have just gotten Lana Pudar, which would help close some of the sprint free and sprint fly holes left by the Walshes and Parker.
Too bad he can’t get any points from diving…giving up 3 point scoring events when he could recruit the best coaches and divers if he put a little effort into it..:so many good divers right in his own home state! Maybe he can with without them this year, but ACC diving is stacked! ACC champ Anna Lemkin will likely be a force next season. The freshmen ladies are just getting started! Now that all the 5th years are graduating, Stanford, Texas and Indy are going to clean up in diving.
UVA has no separate dive well, no 10m tower, and no way to install one. The best divers were already looking elsewhere.
UNC is in the same boat, but managed to recruit two great dive coaches, and a rockstar freshman who finished 3rd on 1M. They have another incoming recruit that will rise quickly as well. They had 3 divers make the ACC Plaform finals (Top 8), dominated ACC Men overall in diving points, and had the most points for ACC women over Stanford in diving. They train at a platform facility an hour away (like many colleges without platform do). Aranza placed 3rd in the Consol Finals in Platform at nationals, and had two others who just missed consol finals.
Divers are used to going elsewhere to practice platform. Is it convenient? No….but there are very few platform facilities around… Read more »
Agreed, it is a disappointing decision.
Not only is this argument long proven to be incorrect, it is just so tired…
Desorbos shifting his focus to the men’s team after this year. Clear as day
Good luck getting an ounce of his time if your name doesn’t start with the letter G, K, T, M ðŸ¤
Just admit you hate UVA-DeSorbo. Every comment from you is negative
For sure he has affinity to great talent.
I have more respect to coaches like Eddie Reese who develop less talented swimmers to become great swimmers.
Like who?
There may be fewer recent examples since the bar to swim at Texas got so high, but Shaun Jordan wasn’t amazing coming in as a walk on that Eddie turned into a two time Olympian and relay gold medalist. There are probably more recent examples but that one sprung to mind.
Idk if you can compare to a recruit from the 1980s. It’s not the same game, and clubs are WAY more sophisticated now than they were then. It is way rarer to find a diamond-in-the-rough today generally.
And Shaun was 3rd at the Texas state championship as a senior, so he was raw and uncommitted, but not a total slouch.
There might be an example here and there but don’t let them fool you, Eddie Reese mostly recruited and coached chalk.
I was surprised I was getting so many downvotes. Luckily the only example they came up with was someone who is 57 years old now 😂
With all of the focus on the Walshes and Kate, it is easy to say that. When you look down the roster at points scored during these five years, you get a different result.
On the women’s side, there are only a handful of women who were not ranked coming out of high school on the last two Olympic teams:
Annie Lazor
Erika Brown
Catie DeLoof
Anna Peplowski
And only a few were outside the top 10:
Madden (18, 2017)
Flickinger (12, 2012)
Weber (14, 2022)
He’s definitely developed some great swimmers. He took Alexis Wegner who had not gone a best time since she was 14 in the 100 breast from a 1:00 down to a 56. Lexi Cuomo went from a 52 to a 50 in the 100 fly and a 22.9 to a 21.6 in the 50 free and went much faster on relays. Ella Nelson went from a 4:10 to a 3:59 in the 400 IM and from a 1:57 to a 1:53 in the 200 IM.
It’s just harder to produce diamonds in the rough when you are the 5 time defending NCAA champion because you can exclusively recruit talent that is so top end, there’s not much room for improvement.
Time to pry loose C. Vincent (50/100 FR) from Alabama to replace M. Parker (50/100 FR). The transfer portal awaits. It’s not if Alabama will be contending for the NCAA title let alone the SEC title next season.
It will take more than one transfer to plug the holes in the roster vacated by M. Parker, A. Walsh, G. Walsh for the 2025-2026 NCAA Season.
Bama was awful i agree. But i keep waiting for Maximus and company to bail before next fall. Uva men are as bad as Bama women.
The Cal Bears are coming! Virginia’s time is over.
Maybe 2nd they don’t know how to win only get 2nd
I mean, Teagan O’Dell in college is gonna be DEADLY
